INDIANAPOLIS - Indianapolis Indians 2016 Team MVP Trevor Williams held his former team to two hits in the first five innings en route to a 5-2 Iowa Cubs win on Friday night.

Williams (W,1-0), on a major league rehab assignment, allowed one unearned run in his five-inning outing. The lone Indians (27-24) run off their former starter came in the second when T.J. Rivera doubled home Christian Bethancourt after an error by MLB rehabber Nico Hoerner extended the inning.

The Cubs (19-30) quickly tied the game and then some, taking the lead in the top of the third inning on a two-run single off the bat of Nick Martini. Trent Giambrone singled in Martini for a 3-1 Iowa lead, which the Indians inevitably could not overcome.

Indy quickly attempted a comeback once Williams exited the game, scoring one run on a walk, wild pitch and RBI single by Bethancourt to drive in Will Craig. Iowa then put up two insurance runs on homers by Alfonso Rivas and Tony Wolters in the seventh to extend the lead to 5-2.

Steven Wright (L, 3-4) surrendered three runs on seven hits in five innings. He walked five batters and racked up a total of 119 pitches thrown in the outing.

Jake Jewell (S, 3) got the save for Iowa as part of a combined effort with Dillon Maples to hold the Indians hitless in the final two innings.

The Indians and I-Cubs will face off again tomorrow night as the Fourth of July weekend celebration continues. RHP Max Kranick (1-2, 4.66) will start for the Indians coming off his perfect MLB debut performance. RHP Matt Swarmer (0-4, 12.12) will take the mound for the Cubs.
