Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers have had an up-and-down 2014-15 season, but one of the positives has been the fact that they have beaten first place opponents on four different occasions. The most recent of those victories came on Friday night, when they got the upper hand on the Toledo Walleye, 4-1 at WesBanco Arena. Franky Palazzese made 27 saves, while Riley Brace and David Gilbert both chipped in with two points.
Power plays were few and far between during Friday's game, but the Nailers capitalized on their first at the 17:25 mark of the opening stanza. Zack Torquato let a wrist shot go from the middle of the blueline, hoping to take advantage of traffic in the slot. David Gilbert redirected Torquato's chance, slipping it through Neil Conway's legs. Derek Army also assisted on the lone first period goal.
The score stayed 1-0 until the final five minutes of the second period, when Wheeling added to its lead. Tristin Llewellyn escaped a defender on the left side of the offensive zone, getting a hard backhander on goal from high in the slot. Conway made the initial save, but the rebound dropped into the crease, where it was pounced on by Chaz Johnson for his tenth goal of the campaign.
Toledo netted its first goal of the night at the 1:07 mark of the third period, when Kyle Bonis completed a centering pass by Justin Mercier, banging in a shot from the left side of the slot. However, the Nailers grabbed some insurance a little more than five minutes later, when Josh Archibald's left wing drive produced a rebound for Riley Brace to deposit for a 3-1 advantage. Brace added an empty net goal in the final minute, after a tremendous hussle play by Jarrett Burton to beat out an icing call for the 4-1 final.
Franky Palazzese earned a win in goal for Wheeling for the second straight Friday, making 27 saves on 28 shots. Neil Conway suffered just his second regulation loss of the year for Toledo, turning aside 21 of the 24 shots he faced.
The Nailers will continue their three-game weekend on Saturday night with an 8:05 clash against the Cincinnati Cyclones.
