Beast Unable to Wrangle Americans

February 6, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Brampton Beast News Release

BRAMPTON, ON- The Brampton Beast came equipped with lassos but were unable to wrangle in the Allen Americans, as they fell by a final score of 5-1 in a game that was dubbed the Canadians vs. the Americans on Guaranteed Fun Night at the Powerade Centre.

Grant Rollheiser led the team with 31 saves, while Bobby Hughes added his fourth goal in a Beast uniform in a game that saw the Beast lack their usual relentless energy through out parts of the game.

The first period saw an extremely fast-paced, up-tempo start to the game. Both teams traded chances back and forth during the opening ten minutes, with 15 total shots being fired on goal. Just over the halfway mark of the first period, Allen started utilizing the cycle to their advantage. The Americans hemmed tired Beast players in their own zone for an extended period of time when ECHL leading scorer Chad Costello trekked to the top of the right circle and took a cross-ice pass from Greger Hansen. Costello one-timed a blast high blocker that beat a sprawling Gr ant Rollheiser to make it 1-0.

The second period saw the Americans dominate possession through out the first five minutes of the frame. Lazy defensive zone coverage by the Beast led to two goals by the Americans, both of them in very similar fashion. After a missed defensive assignment two minutes into the period, Allen's Josef Fojtik banged a rebound into the back of the net to put the Americans ahead by two. Just under three minutes later, a mirror image of the play happened, with Jamie Shaafsma finishing it off that time to put Allen ahead 3-0. Later in the frame, with Brett Lyon in the box for the Americans, a puck careened off the end boards that coaxed Riley Gill into leaving the goal, and ultimately landed on the stick of Bobby Hughes, who potted his fourth goal in a Beast uniform to make the score 3-1 heading into the third.

The Beast lost the momentum they gained at the end of the second frame as Allen came out to start the third period with two quick goals in a minute and 15 seconds, the first of which came at 19:06 on a tape-to-tape tap-in finished by Jesse Messier to make it 4-1. Not twenty seconds later, the Beast turned the puck over near centre ice and Garrett Clark started the transition the other way. He crossed the Beast blue line and lifted a shot passed a screened Grant Rollheiser to push the Americans lead to 5-1. The Beast tried to fight back later in the period, outshooting the Americans 11-9, but it was to no avail, as the Beast wound up with a deficit to big to overcome.

The Beast hit the road travelling to South Dakota, to take on the Rapid City Rush for a three-game series next week. The Beast return home on Monday February 16, to take on the Tulsa Oilers at the Powerade Centre on Mascot Family Day where fans and families get to meet Boomer's friends!
