K-Wings move into a third place tie with victory over Komets

KALAMAZOO- The Kalamazoo Wings took the first half of a home-and-home over the Fort Wayne Komets in a decisive manner, winning 6-3 Friday night at Wings Stadium. The victory put the K-Wings in a third place tie in the North Division with the Cincinnati Cyclones.

Knocking in his fourth goal of the season, Ray Kaunisto gave the K-Wings the lead with a power-play goal 15:42 into the first period. Justin Taylor, who assisted on the goal, extended his point streak to three games.

Wasting no time to widen the margin, Gergo Nagy put the K-Wings ahead by two goals with a little dribbler through the legs of Roman Will 34 seconds into the second period.

Fort Wayne bounced back later in the period with a power-play strike by Brett Perlini (8th). Not to be outdone, the K-Wings connected for their second man-advantage tally minutes later when Eric Kattelus found Jeremie Blain for his fourth goal of the season. Three of Blain's four goals this season have come against Fort Wayne. Kattelus' assist extended his point streak to four games, while Matt Caria, who also earned an assist, has recorded points in six consecutive contests. After snapping a 0-for-29 power-play drought last Saturday, the K-Wings have earned four power-play tallies in their last seven attempts.

Giving Kalamazoo its largest lead of the night, Dane Fox notched is team-leading 14th goal of the season.

Trying to swing momentum, Fort Wayne pulled Will in favor of Pat Nagle to start the third period.

Nagle's fate started similar to Will's in the period when Kalamazoo added to their lead early in the stanza, with a Caria (14th) breakaway goal. Caria's backhander tied him with Fox for the team lead in goals.

Just 2:34 later, the Komets cut the K-Wings lead to 5-2 with a Paul Crowder (5th) marker. The goal was the second on the man-advantage for Fort Wayne.

Giving Fort Wayne a pulse, Drew Daniels found room in the slot between the circles to bring the Komets back to within two goals.

The K-Wings ended the night the same way they started it, with a Kaunisto goal. Kaunisto (5th) netted his second goal of the game with an empty-netter to close out the scoring.

Joel Martin turned aside 36 saves in the victory, giving the netminder 77 saves in his last two appearances between the pipes.

Kalamazoo will begin a season-long five-game road swing tomorrow, Saturday, February 7th with a 7:30 p.m. encounter against Fort Wayne.

The K-Wings will return home on Wednesday, February 18th for a 7 p.m. face-off versus the Gwinnett Gladiators on Wacky Wednesday featuring 10-cent hot dogs.
