Tough Way to Get a Point

The Wheeling Nailers earned one point on Tuesday night, when they played host to the Toledo Walleye at WesBanco Arena. However, they would have much rather had a two-point performance, as they carried a 4-2 lead into the third period, only to see the Walleye come back to steal a 5-4 shootout victory. The first period was packed with offense, as both teams lit the lamp twice, with Zack Torquato and Derek Army doing the honors for the Nailers. Wheeling built its 4-2 advantage in the middle frame, thanks to tallies by David Makowski and Riley Brace. Torquato was also responsible for the lone shootout marker, which wasn't enough against the high-powered Walleye, who scored on all four of their attempts.

Toledo Also Wins With Defense

The Elmira Jackals are also coming off of a setback against the Toledo Walleye, but Monday night's game was decided in a different manner. Instead of utilizing their lethal offensive attack, the Walleye turned to their defense and goaltending, as Jeff Lerg turned in a 21-save shutout for a 3-0 win at First Arena. Toledo built a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Cody Lampl and Kyle Bonis, before tacking on one more in the second, when Tyler Barnes converted for the first of his three power play goals in the last two games. Sam Marotta was the gaoaltender of record for the fourth game in a row (2-2-0), and has appeared in six consecutive contests, dating back to March 2nd.

All Four Columns Now Occupied

It took until the 59th game of the regular season, but on Tuesday night, the Nailers finally suffered their first shootout loss of the campaign, when Toledo scored on all four of its shots, securing the victory. Wheeling now holds a 3-1 record when games are decided in a shootout, converting on ten of their 22 attempts for a 45.5% mark for its shooters. After denying each of the first nine opposition shots, the goaltending is looking to bring some of that magic back, having surrendered goals on nine of the last 14 tries. The Nailers are in search of their first winning shootout record since 2004-05. Continuing with the theme of bonus hockey, Wheeling is 1-1 in overtime, Elmira is 5-0 in overtime, and the Jackals are 2-6 in shootouts.

Club 50 is Point Heaven

Zack Torquato has piled up the points in his five-year professional career against Elmira, totaling 15 goals, 24 assists, and 39 points in 45 games. On Friday night, he would especially enjoy finding his name on the scoresheet, as he enters play with a nine-game point streak. That run ties him with Florida's Alex Lavoie for the second longest active streak in the ECHL, trailing Cincinnati's Byron Froese, who is currently playing in the AHL. It also ties Riley Brace for the longest streak by a Wheeling player this season. Brace had his string foiled on Saturday, but still has points in ten of his last 11 games. Derek Army has also been cooking up the points as of late, as he carries a seven-game point streak into New York. All three of those players have eclipsed the 50-point plateau, marking the first time three Nailers have achieved that in a single season since 2009-10.

Time to Switch up the Venues

Friday night marks the ninth of 13 head-to-head meetings between the Nailers and Jackals this season, as well as the third of six battles between the two clubs at First Arena. In a bit of an odd twist, this is Wheeling's first visit to the State of New York since November 22nd and 23rd, when the two squads split a weekend series. The Nailers have already clinched their home ice portion of the season series, winning five of the first six tilts, and will have their second opportunity at slamming the door on the entire season series, as they enter Friday with a 6-2-0 mark against their former division rivals. The last time the two sides saw each other was last Saturday, when the Jackals erased a 1-0 deficit for a 4-1 win - their first of the campaign at WesBanco Arena.

The next homestand will take place with four games in five days from March 25th-29th . NASCAR Night on March 28th will be the highlight game of the week, as the Nailers will wear special jerseys as part of CORE Weekend, while a NASCAR race car will be at the game. March 29th will be the final Family Funday and Post Game Skate, while March 27th is a Flat Screen Friday, Frosty Friday, and Player Poster Giveaway.
