Reading Fightin Phils News Release
(HARRISBURG, PA) - Mickey Moniak extended his on-base streak to 14 games with a single in the third inning, but the Harrisburg Senators powered past the R-Phils with a nine-run fifth inning as Reading suffered an 11-2 loss in the series opener at FNB Field.
Moniak has collected a hit in nine consecutive games, and is batting .318 in the month of May.
The game got off to a promising start for Reading (24-18), as Arquimedes Gamboa singled to open the ballgame and moved to second on a grounder. With two outs, Darick Hall came through with a single to right to score Gamboa and bump the Fightins in front, 1-0.
The Fightins continued to pepper Sterling Sharp (5-3) with singles, and tacked on a second run in the fourth inning.
Base hits by Austin Listi and Josh Stephen, along with an error that allowed Raul Rivas to reach, loaded the bases for Reading. With two outs, Gamboa worked an eight-pitch at-bat and pulled a soft grounder to first, beating first baseman Austin Davidson to the bag for an infield single. That hit scored Listi to make it 2-0 Reading.
Harrisburg (30-16) pulled even in the bottom half. A pair of hits got a rally going before Tres Barrera was hit by a pitch by Mauricio Llovera (2-1) for the second time, prompting the umpires to issue a warning. Senators manager Matt LeCroy argued the ruling and was promptly ejected.
A wild pitch scored the first run, and Ian Sagdal's infield single pushed home Davidson to knot the game up at two.
The thread began to unravel in the fifth, after an Adrian Sanchez RBI double and Chuck Taylor run-scoring single put Harrisburg up 4-2 and ended the evening for Llovera. Garrett Cleavinger induced a force out for the second out, but the Senators proceeded to put the next eight men on. All told, they sent 14 to the plate in the frame, scoring nine runs to go up 11-2.
The Fightins battle the Senators in game two of the five-game set on Saturday, with first pitch at 6 p.m. Ramon Rosso takes the hill for Reading, opposed by Tyler Mapes. The game will be broadcast on 610 ESPN and the Fightins broadcast network beginning at 5:30 p.m.
