LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS

At Portland (12/26): Defenseman David Kolomatis scored the fastest overtime goal in franchise history as the Manchester Monarchs came from behind to top the Portland Pirates, 2-1, in overtime at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Saturday night. Left wing David Meckler scored the Monarchs lone goal in regulation. Left wing Brad Larsen tallied for the Pirates. Monarchs goaltender Jonathan Bernier (16-8-2) collected his 16th win of the season with 27 saves on 28 shots. Pirates netminder Jhonas Enroth (10-10-1) took the overtime loss with 20 saves. Manchester was 0-for-3 on the power play. Portland did not have a power play opportunity in the game.

Vs. Providence (12/27): Goaltender Jeff Zatkoff recorded his second shutout of the season stopping all 36 shots from the Providence Bruins as the Manchester Monarchs skated away with a 2-0 victory at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Sunday night. Left wing Bud Holloway and right wing Kevin Westgarth scored for the Monarchs. Zatkoff (7-2-0) collected his seventh win of the season saving all 36 shots. Bruins goaltender Kevin Regan (3-3-0) took his third loss of the season saving 23-of-25 shots. Manchester was 1-for-3 on the power play. Providence was 0-for-3 with the man advantage.

NEWS & NOTES

The Manchester Monarchs (23-9-1-2) remain in first place in the AHL with 49 points in 35 games this season. They are narrowly ahead of the Hershey Bears (23-8-0-2) who have 48 points in 33 games.

Sunday's 2-0 victory over Providence moved Manchester to 23-9-1-2 (.700) for a league-leading 49 points on the season. By virtue of having the AHL's second-best points percentage at the cut-off date, fourth-year Monarchs head coach Mark Morris and assistant Scott Pellerin will coach the PlanetUSA AHL All-Stars at the Time Warner Cable AHL All-Star Classic in Portland on January 18-19. Hershey will coach the Canadian AHL All-Stars as they are the reigning Calder Cup champions.

The Monarchs are 14-3-0-1 at the Verizon Wireless Arena this season with their only regulation losses coming at the hands of the Bears on Saturday, November 7 in a 4-1 loss, a 2-0 shutout to the Portland Pirates on Wednesday, December 2 and a 3-2 loss to the Lowell Devils on Saturday, December 12. Manchester won their first six home games this season.

The Monarchs penalty kill is ranked third in the AHL. They have given up 15 goals in 140 attempts when their opponent has had the man advantage.

Their power play is ranked ninth in the league with 25 goals on 136 opportunities with the man advantage.

Manchester has been outshot by their opponent in 27-of-35 games thus far this season.

The Monarchs are 13-0-0-0 when scoring the first goal on home ice.

Manchester is also undefeated on home ice when playing on Fridays this season with a record of 6-0-0-0.

The Monarchs shutout their opponent for the 71st time in team history when they gave the Providence Bruins a 2-0 goose egg on Sunday, December 27.

Center Corey Elkins (8-12=20) and center Gabe Gauthier (5-15=20) lead the Monarchs with 20 points each.

Both Elkins and center Oscar Moller (9-10=19) were recalled by the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday, December 22.

Gauthier leads the Monarchs with 15 assists.

Left wing Bud Holloway (10-7=17) collected his team-leading 10th goal of the season on Sunday.

Moller and Holloway are tied for second in the AHL with four game-winning goals.

Defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov (6-11=17) leads Monarchs blueliners with 17 points which is tied for fourth overall on the Monarchs squad.

Right wing Scott Parse (3-10=13) leads the team in the plus/minus category with a plus-11 in only 10 games this season.

Defenseman David Kolomatis (2-9=11) scored his first game-winning goal at the 31-second mark of overtime in Saturday's 2-1 win over the Portland Pirates. Kolomatis' goal set a new record for the fastest goal scored by a Monarchs player in overtime. The previous record was held by forward Jared Aulin who tallied an overtime goal at the 46-second mark of overtime in the Monarchs 2-1 win over the Pirates in Maine on November 2, 2002.

Goaltender Jonathan Bernier has a record of 16-8-2 in 26 games of the season. His 16 wins are tied for first in the AHL.

Bernier's four shutouts are also tied for second in the AHL.

Bernier is ranked third in the league with a 1.88 goals-against-average and is ranked second with a.944 save percentage.

Bernier made seven consecutive starts in net for the Monarchs from December 6-26 and is tied for third all-time with netminder Jason LaBarbera for 40 wins in a Manchester uniform.
