Portland Pirates News Release


The Pirates suffered a 2-1 overtime setback against the Manchester Monarchs Saturday at the Cumberland County Civic Center in their lone game last week.

Portland gets back to regular action this week with three games in four days. The Pirates host the Worcester Sharks Thursday night at the CCCC in the continuation of the Unum Challenge. Saturday the Pirates travel to Manchester to battle the Monarchs again before closing out the week in Providence against the Bruins on Sunday.

In their only game last week the Pirates saw David Kolomatis score just 31 seconds into overtime to lift Manchester to a 2-1 win in front of 4,134 at the CCCC. David Meckler also scored for the Monarchs, who improved to 22-9-1-2 with the victory. Brad Larsen scored the lone Pirates goal. Portland slipped to 16- 12-4-2 with the loss. The Pirates outshot the Monarchs 28-22 in the game as Jhonas Enroth took the loss.

This Week:

The Pirates are on home ice Thursday at the CCCC where they will play the Worcester Sharks at a 5:30 PM. Saturday the Pirates go to Manchester to meet the Monarchs at a 7 p.m. The Pirates end their week in Providence when they scuffle with the Bruins in a 4:05 p.m. face-off.

Thursday, December 31, 2009 vs. Worcester (CCCC), 5:30 p.m.

Worcester (18-12-0-2) is tied with Portland for fourth in the Atlantic Division with 38 points.

Heading into this week's action the Sharks were winners of two straight and were 7-2-0-1 in their last 10 games.

Logan Couture is the Sharks leading scorer (and the top rookie point getter in the AHL) with 11 goals and 18 assists for 29 points in 20 games. In his last five games Couture has collected two goals and six assists.

The Pirates lead the Unum Challenge 2-0-0-1 with Worcester winning the last meeting 3-2 in a shootout (December 6th).

Saturday, January 2, 2010 @ Manchester (Verizon Wireless Arena), 7 p.m.

Manchester owns a 23-9-1-2 record and sports the most points in the AHL with 49

Heading into this week's action the Monarchs had won three straight and were 8-2 in their last 10 games.

Jonathan Bernier ranks third in the AHL in goals against average with a 1.88 mark.

The game will mark the fourth of 10 meetings between the two teams and the second time they will see one another in a week. Manchester leads the season series 2-1-0-0, including a 2-1 OT victory in the last meeting on December 26th.

Sunday, January 3, 2010 @ Providence (Dunkin' Donuts Center) 4:05 p.m.

Providence sports a 16-17-1-0 record to sit seventh in the Atlantic Division.

Heading into this week's action the Bruins had lost three straight and were 4-6 in their last 10 games.

Defenseman Andy Wozniewski has 23 points in 31 games to easily surpass his offensive totals last season when he collected 21 points in 74 games split between Wilkes-Barre and Peoria.

The Bruins are 3-1 against the Pirates so far this season including a 4-3 victory in their last meeting on December 5th at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
