Moose Sweep Heat In Shootout
December 28, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose swept the Abbotsford Heat with a 2-1 shootout decision in front of 7,636 fans at MTS Centre on Monday night. Cory Schneider earned first-star honors with 33 of 34 saves. Marco Rosa and Michael Grabner scored shootout goals while Brian Salcido notched Manitoba's lone goal in regulation.
Guillaume Desbiens' slashing minor at the 18 second mark put the Heat on the first powerplay of the game. Despite planting themselves in the Moose zone, the visitors from Abbotsford failed to register one shot on the man-advantage.
Tempers flared when Geoff Waugh and J.D. Watt took part in a squabble to the left of Schneider's net. After a lengthy battle, that showcased back-and-forth punches, both parties were handed five-minute fighting majors.
Manitoba drew first blood at 4:49. Defenseman Brian Salcido rocked the puck from the blue line and watched it sail past Leland Irving to score his second goal in as many nights.
The early half of the second period was packed with penalties, but neither team could connect on the powerplay. By the midway point of the game the Moose lead the shot clock 21-19.
With Tommy Maxwell serving time for roughing at 16:04 the Heat were able to get on the board. With a scramble of players in front of Schneider's crease, Jamie Lundmark poked the puck into the mesh to knot the game at one.
The clubs remained deadlocked until the final minutes of play - each team with 29 shots. With neither squad able to break the tie the teams headed into overtime.
Overtime
The additional five-minutes were not enough to decide a winner and the Moose and Heat headed into a shootout.
