Manchester Monarchs News Release
PORTLAND, ME - The Monarchs surrendered two goals late in the third period as they fell to Portland on Saturday night at the Cross Insurance Arena, 4-3.
Josh Gratton put Manchester ahead just over five minutes into the third period, but the Pirates answered with two goals in the final period. Three of Gratton's four goals this season have come against the Pirates, tallying five points total against them (3 goals, 2 assists).
The Monarchs (33-14-5-2) still hold a 5-3 advantage over the Pirates (29-22-3-1) in their battle for the VIP Cup.
Alexandre Bolduc scored the first goal of the game on the power play at 5:43 in the first after a roughing call to Vincent LoVerde set up the man advantage.
Manchester tied the score at 9:50 in the first when Scott Sabourin tipped in a Jeff Schultz wrister from the point. The goal was Sabourin's third of the season and first since Nov. 1 vs. STJ.
Evan Oberg scored the go-ahead goal for Portland at 9:30 in the second, but Manchester answered at 11:01 in the frame when Nic Dowd finished off a breakaway opportunity.
Gratton buried a rebound right in front of Mike McKenna to give the Monarchs a 3-2 lead at 5:12 in the third.
With the Pirates on a power play, Jordan Szwarz tipped in the game-winning goal at 17:56 in the third period.
The Monarchs will be back at the Verizon Wireless Arena for a 3 p.m. game against Worcester tomorrow afternoon.
Notes:
Manchester went 0-for-3 on the power play tonight. Portland was 2-for-2 on the power play, including the game-winning goal. Nic Dowd's goal was his fifth of the year and first since Dec. 7 against Norfolk. The Monarchs have surrendered the first goal in six of their last seven games, posting a 3-3-1-0 record in that time. Colin Miller was ejected from the game after the second period due to his second fight of the game, resulting in a game misconduct. Miller had not engaged in a single fight this season prior to tonight.
