Grand Rapids Griffins News Release
ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Grand Rapids Griffins finished the month of February on a positive note, equaling the franchise record for consecutive road wins with seven as they defeated the Chicago Wolves 5-0 Saturday at Allstate Arena.
During their current road winning streak, the Griffins have outscored opponents 32-4. During the previous seven-game road winning streak (Oct. 16-Dec 3, 2004) they outscored the home team 23-12.
When combining its' last trip to Allstate Arena Feb. 15, the Griffins have outscored the Wolves 10-1.
Tonight's win saw goals from five different Griffins' players. Brian Lashoff scored first at 11:03 of the first period when he capitalized on a failed Colin Fraser clear and fired a low shot through traffic past Chicago goaltender Jordan Binnington from near the top of the left circle for his first goal of the season with Grand Rapids.
Kevin Porter's ninth tally of the season came at 3:44 of the second period when he took a pass from Landon Ferraro and shot a wrister from the right side over Binnington's blocker.
Grand Rapids (33-17-5-1) had five power play opportunities against Chicago (27-21-5-1), and its' only conversion came at 18:37 of the middle frame when Mark Zengerle found Andy Miele to the left and Miele found an open net and put the puck past a diving Binnington for his 19th goal of the campaign.
That would be the last goal Binnington would allow, as he was pulled at the second intermission in favor of Matt Climie. Binnington finished with 24 saves on 27 shots.
It didn't take soon for the visitors to score on Climie, as Ferraro scored the second shorthanded goal in as many nights for the Griffins. He skated with the puck from his own blue line, made a move around Joel Edmundson and finished with a backhanded shot over Climie's glove for his 23rd goal this season at 6:34.
Anthony Mantha's 11th tally of the season round out the scoring at 12:17. Climie made five saves on seven shots.
Petr Mrazek turned away all 27 shots for his second straight and third shutout in his last five games. His shutout streak of 144:28 is in reach of teammate Jared Coreau's perfect streak of 160:06 that was snapped Feb. 6 against Rochester.
The Midwest Division-leading Griffins return to Van Andel Arena for one game against West Division leaders Oklahoma City Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Notes: Xavier Ouellet was assigned back to Grand Rapids from Detroit this afternoon... The Griffins finished February without a regulation loss, going 10-0-2-0... The Griffins have earned 30 of a possible 34 points over their last 17 games dating back to Jan. 23.
Three Stars: 1. GR Mrazek (W, 27 saves, SO); 2. GR Ferraro (goal, assist); 3. GR Lashoff (goal)
