Hamilton Bulldogs News Release

HAMILTON, ONT. - Charlotte Checkers forward Justin Shugg had two goals - including the overtime game winner - and an assist to lead the Checkers (21-29-5-1) to a 4-3 win over the Hamilton Bulldogs (27-21-8-0) on Saturday evening at FirstOntario Centre.

Hamilton forward Daniel Carr opened the scoring at 9:29 of the first period when he found a rebound in front and ripped a wrist shot past Charlotte goaltender John Muse for his team-leading 19th goal of the season. Forward Charles Hudon and defenceman Morgan Ellis had assists.

With 45 seconds to go in the opening frame, Shugg tied the game 1-1 with a wrist shot from the high slot, assisted by forward Ben Holmstrom and defenceman Danny Biega.

Less than two minutes into the second period, 'Dogs forward Sven Andrighetto collected a rebound off a Carr wraparound attempt and lifted the puck over Muse's pad for his 13th goal of the season to give Hamilton a 2-1 lead. Hudon notched a second assist on the play.

Before Hamilton's second goal was announced in-arena, Charlotte forward Alex Aleardi erased the lead and tied the game, 2-2. Aleardi's goal, scored at 2:21 of the middle stanza, was assisted by forward Phil Di Giuseppe and Holmstrom.

At 14:55 of the second period, 'Dogs forward T.J. Hensick spun and fired a wrist shot from the high slot that fooled Muse for his 15th goal of the season to put Hamilton ahead 3-2. Forward Drayson Bowman had the only assist.

Just 13 seconds into the third period, Checkers forward Zach Boychuk tied the game, 3-3, with assists from Shugg and defenceman Trevor Carrick.

The rest of the third period solved nothing, forcing overtime. Six minutes into the OT period, with the teams skating 3-on-3, Shugg buried his second goal of the night to lift the Checkers to the win, with an assist from forward Brendan Woods.

Joey MacDonald made 40 saves on 44 shots for the Bulldogs in the loss, while Muse stopped 29 of 32 shots faced for the Checkers in the win.

Hamilton went 0-for-1 on the power play, while Charlotte was 1-for-7 with a man advantage.
