Bridgeport Islanders News Release

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers suffered their first shutout of the season on Saturday, falling 3-0 to the Springfield Falcons at MassMutual Center.

Anton Forsberg made 22 saves in the win for Springfield. It was the first time the Sound Tigers have been shutout since the final game of last season when they dropped a 2-0 decision in Hartford.

The first 11 minutes in the game saw just five shots combined between the two teams. Springfield appeared to take a 1-0 lead midway through the first period when a shot found the back of the net, but the referee ruled Ryan Craig did not allow Kevin Poulin to make the save, resulting in a no-goal call and no penalty called on the play.

However, the Falcons came right back and made sure their next goal counted, as Mike Hoeffel scored the first official goal of the contest. Hoeffel jammed a wraparound through the pad of Poulin to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. It was the winger's second goal in as many games against the Sound Tigers.

Sean Collins increased Springfield's lead to 2-0 three minutes later. Luke Adam worked his way behind the net and fed Collins in the slot, who snapped a shot past Poulin and gave the Falcons the two-goal lead. It was the first true multi-goal lead for either team this weekend, as the two traded one-goal leads yesterday before the empty net goal.

Bridgeport commanded the play in the second period, but the Falcons were the ones who got the only goal of the middle frame. With just 35.5 seconds left in the period, Domenic Monardo found Michael Chaput on the doorstep, who tapped in his third goal in two games against the Sound Tigers. The Falcons took a 3-0 lead into the third period despite the shots being even at 17-17.

That was all the scoring there was in the game, as the Sound Tigers failed to put one past Forsberg despite several power plays, including a 5-on-3 in the third period.

Poulin made 20 stops for the Sound Tigers and helped the team to a perfect 5-for-5 penalty kill on the night. Bridgeport's power play went 0-for-4.

The Sound Tigers return home to Bridgeport for an afternoon contest tomorrow against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Puck drop is at 3:00 p.m.

Notes: Dov Grumet-Morris was the last goaltender to shut out the Sound Tigers, making 23 saves on April 19, 2014...The Sound Tigers have lost eight straight games...Alan Quine had his three game goal scoring streak snapped.
