Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
HARTFORD, Conn. - Andrew Ebbett's breakaway goal at 2:27 of overtime allowed Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to edge past the Hartford Wolf Pack, 3-2, and extend the Penguins' season-best point streak to nine games.
The Penguins held a 2-1 lead in the third period before Chris Mueller's second goal of the game tied the score for the Wolf Pack with 8:43 remaining in regulation. Mueller got a piece of a center blueline shot from blueliner Mike Kostka and was able to put back his own rebound after Jeff Zatkoff slid across the crease to make the initial save.
Both teams earned a point after regulation ended in a 2-2 deadlock, but it would Wilkes-Barre/Scranton coming on top for the seventh win in its last eight matches. Penguins defenseman Brian Dumoulin won a wall battle at just outside his own zone and feathered a pass behind the Wolf Pack defense for Ebbett. The veteran center skated in alone and beat Hartford goalie Yann Danis with a wrister to the blocker side for his 13th goal of the season.
After a scoreless first, the Penguins jumped ahead, 1-0, 1:54 into the second frame when a quick snap shot from the left by Reid McNeill deflected off a stick and floated over the shoulder of Danis.
Hartford was able to respond at the 6:00 mark of the same period with its first man-advantage of the match. It took only seven seconds of the power play for Chris Bourque to set up Mueller on the far circle for his first tally of the night - a wrist shot that sneaked under the arm of Zatkoff.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton went back on top on its first power play in the game when Jayson Megna cashed in on a rebound chance with 8.6 seconds left until the second intermission.
The Penguins completed the month of February without a regulation loss, going 7-0-1-1 and have recorded points in 13 of their last 14 games (11-1-1-1).
Zatkoff raised his record to 14-10-4 with 29 saves on 31 shots. Danis suffered his seventh consecutive loss, turning aside 26-of-29.
The Penguins head to Bridgeport on Sunday, Mar. 1 to face the Sound Tigers at 3:00 p.m. Listen in on WILK Newsradio or watch online at AHL Live.
