Monarchs Downed In Shootout

PORTLAND, ME - Centers Ryan Getzlaf and Aaron Gavey scored in the shootout as the Portland Pirates sneaked past the Manchester Monarchs, 5-4, in front of a crowd of 4,661 at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Wednesday night. The Monarchs (10-3-0-3, 23 points) are in sole possession of second place in the Atlantic Division. Portland (14-4-0-0, 28 points) continues to lead the Atlantic Division.

Manchester started off the scoring as right wing Konstantin Pushkarev tallied is fifth of the year at 2:21 of the first period. On the power play, defensemen Marty Wilford and Richard Seeley cycled the puck at the points before sliding it down to Pushkarev, positioned to the left of Portland's goaltender Gregg Naumenko. Pushkarev's shot fluttered through traffic and into the back of the net.

Portland evened the game at 1-1 with a power play goal from Getzlaf. Getzlaf fired a shot from the left face-off circle and past Monarchs goaltender Adam Hauser. Right wing Corey Perry and defenseman Shane O'Brien assisted on the goal at 18:57 of the first period.

Center Matt Ryan and the Monarchs regained their lead at 3:23 of the second period. Ryan, positioned on Naumenko's doorstep, took a pass from defenseman Richard Petiot and recorded his third goal of the season. Left wing Jeff Tambellini also assisted on the goal.

Tambellini gave the Monarchs a two-goal lead at 7:18 of the middle frame. The left winger from the University of Michigan scored on his own rebound to the left of Naumenko for his team-leading 12th goal of the season.

Just seconds after Tambellini scored, left wing Kip Brennan was awarded a penalty shot for Portland. Hauser denied the former Monarchs player, who was playing in his first game for Portland since being assigned from Anaheim on Tuesday.

Center Tim Brent brought the Pirates to within one at 8:22 of the second period. Center Igor Pohanka threw a backhander to the front of the net and Brent tip-toed around a Monarchs player and shot a wrister in for his seventh of the season. Right wing Simon Ferguson also assisted on the tally to make it 3-2.

Tying the game at 3-3, Perry tipped in a pass from defenseman Ladislav Smid for his first of the season. Smid skated down the left wing and threw the puck to the front of the net for Perry. Getzlaf assisted on the goal at 19:10 of the second period.

Getzlaf recorded his second of the night at 3:26 of the third period. Positioned at the top of the left wing circle, Getzlaf rifled a shot through traffic and behind Hauser to give the Pirates a 4-3 lead. Center Geoff Peters and O'Brien assisted on the go-ahead goal.

Tambellini tallied his second of the night, 13th of the season, to tie the game, 4-4, at 16:16 of the final frame. Right wing Brad Smyth slid the puck over to Tambellini who flew down the left wing and shot a bullet in for the goal. Left wing Noah Clarke earned an assist on the play.

Vying for the hat trick, Tambellini's shot at the 42-second mark of overtime bounced off of the crossbar.

Naumenko denied all four of the Monarchs snipers in the shootout. Getzlaf scored on the backhand and Gavey scored top shelf on Hauser for the Pirates shootout victory.

Hauser (6-2-2) fell in his second shootout loss of the season stopping 38 shots. Naumenko (4-2-0) earned the win with 28 saves.

Manchester went 1-for-9 on the power play. Lowell was also 1-for-9 with the man advantage.

The Monarchs have pushed 10 out of their 16 games into overtime or a shootout, winning four of the games in overtime and two in the shootout.

A post-Thanksgiving match-up between the Monarchs and the Hartford Wolf Pack is scheduled for Friday, November 25 at 7:35 p.m. at the Verizon Wireless Arean. Manchester then takes on the Springfield Falcons at the MassMutual Center on Saturday, November 26 at 7:05 p.m.
