Barrett leads Norfolk over Phantoms
November 23, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Norfolk Admirals News Release
Nathan Barrett had two goals and an assist as the Admirals downed the Phantoms 4-2.
In the opening period, Philadelphia got on the board first with a five-on-three power play goal from Freddy Meyer at 3:50.
But the Admirals answered with a power play goal of their own nearly four minutes later. Martin St. Pierre passed the puck to Carl Corazzini in the high slot. Corazzini waited for a screen to form before firing the puck through traffic and past Phantoms goalie Martin Houle at 7:41.
The Admirals extended their lead to 2-1 just under three minutes later. Nick Kuiper took a shot from the point that Houle stopped. Norfolk Captain Ajay Baines picked up the rebound and backhanded a pass to Nathan Barrett as he fell down. Barrett slid the puck under Houle at 10:21.
The Phantoms had the last say in the first period, as Eric Chouinard scored off a rebound at 13:31. The Admirals out-shot Philadelphia 14-8 in the opening period, and the score was knotted at 2-2 at the first break.
The game remained tied until the last six minutes of the second stanza. Milan Bartovic netted his second goal of the season off a goalmouth scramble at 15:17.
Two minutes later with Norfolk on the power play, James Wisniewski fed Barrett as he crossed the Philadelphia blue line. Barrett skated to the face-off dot to the right of Houle and unleashed a slap shot that glanced off the crossbar on its way to the top corner of the net at 17:29. The Admirals fired 15 pucks on net to the Phantoms' 7 and took a two-goal lead to the locker room after two periods.
Despite out-shooting the Admirals 8-6 in the final frame, Philadelphia was unable to get one past Corey Crawford, and the game ended 4-2 in favor of Norfolk.
Crawford made 21 stops in net for Norfolk and earned the win. Houle finished with 31 saves and was saddled with the loss.
Norfolk was 2-6 on the power play while Philadelphia was 1-6.
