Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Albuquerque, NM - The Tacoma Rainiers built another early advantage on Thursday, scoring four runs in the second inning to distance themselves from the Albuquerque Isotopes in a 5-3 victory at Isotopes Park, as Ian Miller and Shed Long combined for six knocks to lead a 12-hit attack.
In a scoreless second inning, Jaycob Brugman lined a one-out single to become the first of six Rainiers (38-42) to reach base safely in the inning. Brugman would eventually score on a two-run single from Miller that also plated Kelby Tomlinson for a 2-0 Tacoma lead.
Later in the second, Long poked a single to left field which allowed Lacey, WA native Brennon Kaleiwahea to score his first Triple-A run. Long recorded his second-straight three-hit game after returning to the lineup on Wednesday from a minor shoulder injury.
Kristopher Negron continued the rally with a two-run knock that scored Miller for a four-run advantage.
Miller added an insurance tally with a leadoff home run in the fourth inning against Isotopes (34-46) starter Pat Dean (2-8), his seventh long ball of the season. Miller finished the game 3-for-5 with 3 RBI and 2 runs and also stole his league-leading 21st base. Thursday was the Philadelphia-born outfielder's fourth game with 3 or more RBI this season.
Tacoma was limited to just one hit for the rest of the contest, and leaned on their pitching to take them the rest of the way.
Jon Niese (4-2) earned his second consecutive win for pitching five innings with three runs allowed. The lefty veteran gave up six hits and a pair of walks, striking out two Isotopes.
Ryan Garton relieved Niese with 2 1/3 frames of scoreless baseball and three punchouts before Triple-A All-Star selection Parker Markel slammed the door with a five-out save, his team-leading seventh of the campaign. Markel struck out three and walked a pair but did not allow a hit and stranded the potential tying run on first to end the game.
Friday's series finale between the Rainiers and Isotopes begins at 5:35 p.m. PDT. 2017 Rainiers right-hander Andrew Moore will make his first start of the year for the club. Moore, who made 15 appearances for Tacoma in 2017, played in both the Tampa Bay Rays and San Francisco Giants organizations this season before being claimed by Seattle on May 17.
