June 28, 2019 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (46-35) completed the sweep Omaha Storm Chasers (37-44) with a 9-0 victory Friday, at Principal Park after pulling away in the finale with a six-run sixth inning.
The I-Cubs got on the board first for the fourth-consecutive night on back-to-back doubles from Jacob Hannemann and Dixon Machado in the third inning. Iowa tacked on another run off Omaha starter Foster Griffin (L, 7-3) in the fifth on an Ian Happ RBI single to take a 2-0 lead.
Iowa broke the game open in the sixth inning by sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring six runs. The I-Cubs recorded four hits in the inning, all singles, while also drawing three walks and hitting two sac flies. Mark Zagunis recorded a two-RBI single in the frame to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.
On the mound, Iowa's All-Star Colin Rea (W, 9-2) spun his fifth quality start of the season. He matched his season-high with 7.0 scoreless frames and allowed just three hits. His ninth victory of 2019 ties him with now-Miami Marlin Zac Gallen for the PCL lead.
Duane Underwood Jr. finished the game on the hill for the I-Cubs with two scoreless frames to secure Iowa's fourth shutout of the season.
POSTGAME NOTES:
- The I-Cubs are now 15-0 when scoring eight or more runs.
- This is the third time in the I-Cubs' PCL history that they have swept the same team twice in the same season. Both other instances were also against Omaha, the last occurring in 2008.
- Dixon Machado extended his hitting streak to a season-high five games with a double in the third inning. He went 2-for-3 with two walks and two RBI.
Iowa heads to San Antonio for a five-game series before returning home on July 4 to face Memphis. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
