Melville's Gem, Hessman's Return Highlight Victory
September 1, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
After a come from behind win on Monday the Mud Hens were off and running on Tuesday night once again off Louisville as they looked to win their second game in a row. Tim Melville took the ball against the Bats' Robert Stephenson whom only lasted three innings against the potent Hens' lineup.
Mike Hessman was back on Tuesday after a week long stint on the disabled list and contributed right away in the second inning. With two runners in scoring position the slugger ripped a line drive single to score Manny Pina as Toledo pulled out to a 1-0 lead. The scoring continued two plays later as Dean Green hit his fourth double of the year, scoring Hessman. Daniel Fields took a play out of Green's book and doubled home both Green and Alexi Casilla as the Hens took a 5-0 lead into inning number two.
Hessman was back at it in the second bringing around Pina once again and forcing Louisville's starter to exit the game after just 3.0 innings, tabbed with all five earned runs. For Tim Melville the night was a sharp one on the mound as the righty had good command of all four of his pitches against the Bats' lineup. Melville kept the visiting team scoreless over his six frames of work, allowing just three total hits and earning the win. The sharpness of Melville was not reciprocated from his fellow Hens' arms in the bullpen as Alberto Cabrera and Angel Nesbitt combined for just 1.2 innings of relief behind Meville. The duo surrendered five runs on five hits and put the Bats right back in the game after the seventh with the score narrowed to 6-5.
In the bottom of the eighth Jefry Marte singled around Dixon Machado for a seventh Hens' run and a bit more insurance headed into the ninth as Jose Valdez came on the hold down the lead. Although the Bats had runners at both first and second Valdez buckled down to close the game and earn his fifth save of the season, and the Hens second victory in a row.
In other news the International League was proud to announce on Tuesday that Dixon Machado was named to the IL postseason all-star team at shortstop. It was also announced that seven members of the Detroit Tigers' organization were selected to particpate in the Arizona Fall League, the list included Toledo's own Jeff Ferrell.
Game three of the series between the Mud Hens and Bats will get under way on Wednesday, first pitch is set for 6:30 PM.
