September 1, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Pawtucket, RI) - Pawtucket slugged 15 hits including a season-high-tying eight for extra bases while starter Rich Hill struck out nine batters in seven strong innings as the PawSox bested the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, 10-2, on Tuesday night in the opener of a two-game series before 4,824 fans at McCoy Stadium.
Chris Marrero and Garin Cecchini each homered and collected three hits on the night to lead one of Pawtucket's best offensive performances of the 2015 season. The PawSox batted around twice in the game, scoring five times in the second inning to take the lead, then pulling away by plating four runs in the fourth.
Hill (5-3) allowed solo home runs to Tyler Pastornicky and Russ Canzler but only four total hits on the night. The veteran lefty walked only two while six of his nine punchouts came in his final three innings of work. Dayan Diaz and Pat Light each tossed a perfect inning to finish the victory.
Trailing 1-0 with one out in the bottom of the second, Cecchini started the scoring for Pawtucket with his seventh homer of the season against Lehigh Valley starter Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez (0-1). Later in the frame the PawSox would grab the lead with four two-out runs.
Luis Martinez lined an RBI single to make the score 2-1, while the next batter Deven Marrero hit a two-run double to left-center to push the lead to three. Marco Hernandez capped the rally with an RBI single to left that put Pawtucket ahead 5-1.
The PawSox scored their four runs in the fourth against reliever Jason Berken, who permitted five hits and one walk in the frame. Hernandez hit a two-run triple to left-center and then scored on the play when shortstop Chase d'Arnaud's relay throw caromed into the dugout.
Two batters later Chris Marrero lined his third home run in the last five games into the left field bullpen. Marrero would also collect a pair of doubles on the night and tied a Pawtucket single-game season high with three extra-base hits.
Cecchini's RBI single against reliever Joey DeNato in the sixth capped the scoring. He went 3-for-5 with two RBIs while Hernandez was also 3-for-5 with three runs batted in.
The finale of the series is scheduled for Wednesday night with first pitch at 7:05pm. Right-hander William Cuevas (2-2, 2.79) will get the start for Pawtucket while the IronPigs counter with righty Severino Gonzalez (2-6, 5.03).
