Gwinnett Stripers News Release

DURHAM, NC - After taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning, the Gwinnett Braves (72-65) allowed six runs over the final five innings in a 6-3 loss to the Durham Bulls (70-68) on Tuesday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The G-Braves were swept in the two-game series, the first leg of their final regular-season road trip of 2015.

The loss, coupled with Norfolk's 6-3 win over Charlotte on Tuesday, leaves Gwinnett 4.0 games behind the Tides (76-61) for first place in the International League South Division. The G-Braves remain just a half-game ahead of the Knights (72-66) for second place in the South.

Gwinnett took the lead in the fourth inning against former G-Braves' left-hander Scott Diamond. IL August Player of the Month Mallex Smith opened the frame with a single, recorded his 28th stolen base as a G-Brave and scored on a single by Joey Terdoslavich. After a fielder's choice by Cedric Hunter and throwing error by Bulls' second baseman Ryan Brett moved Terdoslavich to third, Sean Kazmar lifted a sacrifice fly to center to make it 2-0.

But right-hander Victor Mateo struggled in the bottom of the fourth, giving up three runs on four hits. Nick Franklin started the rally with a solo home run (11) to right field, cutting the lead to 2-1. Joey Rickard followed with a double down the left-field line and scored on a two-out single by former G-Brave Jose Constanza. Brett then put Durham ahead 3-2 with a single scoring Mayo Acosta.

Mateo proceeded to allow two more runs in the fifth inning as the Bulls pushed their lead to 5-2. Corey Brown singled, Franklin walked and Cameron Seitzer singled to load the bases. A Rickard sacrifice fly to center scored Brown, and a Jake Elmore single plated Franklin.

The G-Braves loaded the bases with one out against right-hander Parker Markel in the top of the eighth, but scored only once as Hunter drew a bases-loaded walk. His team-leading 73rd RBI brought Gwinnett to within two runs at 5-3. Kazmar followed with the bases still full, but struck out swinging to end the threat.

Durham raised the lead back to three runs in the bottom of the eighth as Brett singled off right-hander Michael Kohn and scored on a single by Brown. Left-hander Mitch Lambson came on and stranded two inherited runners, retiring Seitzer on a tapper to the mound.

Mateo (L, 3-3) worked 5.0 innings and yielded five runs on 11 hits, walked two and struck out one. Left-hander Hunter Cervenka pitched 2.0 scoreless, two-hit innings with a walk and four strikeouts. Kohn was touched for a run on two hits over 0.2 innings, and Lambson retired the only batter he faced.

Diamond (W, 11-5) allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits over 7.1 innings, walked none and struck out four. Markel (H, 2) gave up one run on one hit, walked three and struck out two over 0.2 innings. Left-hander Robert Zarate (S, 1) struck out two of the three batters he faced in a scoreless ninth.

Smith had the only multi-hit game for Gwinnett, going 2-for-4 with a double, stolen base and run scored. Terdoslavich, Hunter and Kazmar each tallied one RBI.

Brett finished 4-for-5 with two doubles, a run scored and an RBI to lead the Bulls.

The G-Braves continue the road trip on Wednesday night with a doubleheader at Harbor Park in Norfolk, VA. Game one of the twinbill against the Norfolk Tides, the Triple-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, starts at 5:05 p.m. Both games are scheduled to be seven-inning contests. In game one, Gwinnett will start right-hander Jake Brigham (3-1, 5.19 ERA), while Norfolk will counter with right-hander Elih Villanueva (4-3, 4.20 ERA). Tony Schiavone has the call beginning at 4:30 p.m. on 97.7 FM and WSBRadio.com.
