
Trio of Knights Recalled to Chicago Today

(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) -Charlotte Knights RHP Erik Johnson, catcher Rob Brantly, and infielder/outfielder Leury Garcia were all recalled to Chicago today, as announced by the Chicago White Sox. Garcia's promotion today was his third of the year, while Johnson and Brantly were recalled for the first time in 2015.
Overall this season, 11 players have gone from Charlotte to Chicago. Along with today's trio, LHP Carlos Rodon (April 20), RHP Scott Carroll (April 26, June 18, & August 1), RHP Daniel Webb (April 26 & May 28), RHP Chris Beck (May 9 & May 28), infielder Carlos Sanchez (May 15), RHP Junior Guerra (June 7), infielder Tyler Saladino (July 10), and outfielder Trayce Thompson (August 3), all earned promotions this season.
Johnson, 25, won the International League's Most Valuable Pitcher Award earlier today. The Mountain View, CA native posted an 11-8 record with a 2.37 ERA for the Knights in 23 games (22 starts) this season. He currently leads the IL in ERA (2.37), strikeouts (136), and WHIP (1.12). He is tied for second in the IL in wins (11) and third in batting average against (.224). He also leads the IL in strikeouts per nine innings with a 9.23 ratio. Originally selected in the second round of the 2011 draft out of the University of California-Berkeley, Johnson appeared in 132.2 innings pitched with the Knights this season and allowed 40 runs (35 earned).
Appearing in 23 games with the Knights this season after a promotion from Double-A Birmingham on August 3, Brantly hit .291 (25-for-86) with 11 runs scored, four home runs, and 16 RBIs with Charlotte. The San Diego, CA native was claimed by the White Sox off waivers from the Miami Marlins on December 8, 2014. The 26-year-old catcher was originally drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the third round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft.
Garcia, 24, hit .298 (104-for-349) with 57 runs scored, 19 doubles, three triples, three home runs, 31 RBIs, and 30 stolen bases this season with the Knights in 90 games. The Dominican native is currently tied for fifth in the IL in batting average and third in stolen bases. On Tuesday, August 25, Garcia became just the 10th player in Charlotte Knights franchise history to steal 30 bases in a season.
The Knights return home to BB&T Ballpark on Wednesday, September 2 to open their final homestand of the regular season. The three-game series against the Durham Bulls begins with a 7:05 p.m. matchup on Wednesday. The two teams will play a day game on Thursday with a 12:05 p.m. start time. On Friday, the Knights and Bulls will conclude their series with another 7:05 p.m. game. After Friday's game - the final home game of the 2015 regular season - the Knights will light up the sky with post-game fireworks courtesy of BB&T and 107.9 The Link.
