Norfolk Tides News Release
Norfolk got a strong outing from Mike Wright and a big night from Junior Lake in a 6-3 win over the Charlotte Knights Tuesday night at Harbor Park.
Making his second rehab start with Norfolk after landing on Baltimore's disabled list with a strained left calf, Wright (9-1) blanked the Knights for six innings while allowing just two hits and one walk. The 25-year-old right-hander struck out three and needed just 65 pitches to navigate his outing as he helped the Tides salvage a split of the two-game set.
The game was scoreless until the sixth frame before the Tides sent eight men to the plate in the inning against Knights starter Kyle Drabek (7-10). Rey Navarro opened the inning with a single, and one out later Drabek issued consecutive walks to load the bases for Lake. Lake then lined a 1-0 offering off the left-center field wall, clearing the bases and giving Norfolk a 3-0 advantage. Audry Perez followed Lake with an RBI single to center field, putting the Tides up, 4-0.
The Tides tacked on two runs in the seventh inning on an RBI single from Henry Urrutia and a run-scoring wild pitch to extend the advantage to 6-0.
Charlotte cut the lead in half in the eighth frame, taking advantage of three walks and a wild pitch to pull within 6-3. Pedro Beato escaped further damage, however, as he retired the final four batters of the contest to earn his 15th save of the season.
Lake reached base safely four times in the contest, while Perez added two singles to extend his hitting streak 11 games.
Norfolk's win, combined with Gwinnett's loss at Durham, extended the Tides divisional lead to 4.0 games over the Braves and 4.5 games over the Knights with just seven games to play in the season. Norfolk hosts Gwinnett in a doubleheader Wednesday, and if the Tides were to sweep the doubleheader and have Charlotte lose at Durham, Norfolk would clinch the South division.
In the opener of Wednesday's doubleheader, Elih Villanueva (4-3, 4.20) gets the start for Norfolk against right-hander Williams Perez (3-1, 1.16), with first pitch slated for 5:05. In the nightcap, knuckleballer Eddie Gamboa (8-10, 4.36) starts for the Tides and will be opposed by right-hander Jake Brigham (3-1, 5.19).
Notes: Earlier Tuesday, the Orioles recalled right-hander Oliver Drake from Norfolk after the Naval Academy product went 1-2 with 23 saves and a 0.82 ERA in 42 games with the Tides...Christian Walker singled in the fourth frame to extend his hitting streak to 10 games...The Tides drew seven walks in the contest, with four of those runners coming around to score...Pedro Beato's appearance was his league-leading 60th of the season, the third-most in franchise history.
