Righty Michael Bowden looked to pick up his second win against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre as a Red Wing, having split his two previous decisions against the RailRiders since joining Rochester back in July. In the opposing dugout, Cito Culver, a 2010 Irondequoit High School graduate, made his homecoming, playing in his third career Triple-A game.
After a scoreless first inning, the RailRiders struck first blood in the second when Gregorio Petit came to the plate and hit his first home run of the season. Culver was the next batter up, making his first appearance at the plate in front of his hometown crowd. Culver swung at the first pitch he saw, and lined out to Argenis Diaz. The Wings trailed 1-0 after two.
The Wings came into the fourth inning ready to strike back. Reynaldo Rodriguez got on base with a heads-up play, running after striking out on a wild pitch, and beating the throw to first. Josmil Pinto then singled on a hard-hit ball to second baseman Ali Castillo, who could not hold on to make the play. During the next at-bat, Rodriguez stole third, and then scored on a wild throw by catcher Juan Graterol
Bowden got into a rhythm after allowing the second inning home run, retiring the next 12 batters he faced. Bowden's streak was finally broken in the sixth, when Castillo got on base with his second hit of the game. Despite giving up the base hit, and hitting a batter, Bowden recorded all three outs in the inning via strikeout, giving him eight strikeouts through six.
In the seventh, Scranton took the lead. Bowden walked Slade Heathcott, and a single by Culver moved Heathcott to third base. Pinch-hitter Jake Cave's sacrifice fly brought home Heathcott for a 2-1 RailRiders lead.
Andury Acevedo took over for Davies in the seventh. Davies worked six innings and allowed just three hits and one run, with five strikeouts. Davies did not walk a batter, and threw 90 pitches, 58 for strikes.
The Wings staged a comeback attempt against Acevedo in the seventh, when Diaz drew a walk and Carlos Paulino singled. But Acevedo got a groundout from Hicks to end the inning.
Bowden worked seven innings, giving up four hits and two earned runs. He walked two, struck out eight, and threw 107 pitches - 71 for strikes. Alex Meyer took the mound in relief to start the eighth inning. Meyer allowed a bloop single and a walk, then struck out the next three batters.
Culver lined out in the second inning, flew out in the fifth, singled in the seventh and was thrown out attempting to bunt on a great fielding play by Meyer. Another fantastic defensive play provided the third out, when Rodriguez leaped high and to his right to take away a run-scoring hit from Castillo.
NOTES: The Minnesota Twins recalled infielder Danny Santana, first baseman Kennys Vargas, and right-handed pitchers A.J. Achter and Michael Tonkin from Triple-A Rochester and selected the contract of catcher Eric Fryer....The Wings activated OF Eric Farris and Allan de San Miguel from the disabled list, and reinstated RHP Loek Van Mil from the temporary inactive list..
