Mallex Smith Named International League Player of the Month
September 1, 2015 - International League (IL1) News Release
The International League announced today that Gwinnett outfielder Mallex Smith has been named the League's Player of the Month for August.  Along with recipients from other leagues, Smith will receive an award from Minor League Baseball in recognition of his performance last month.
With Gwinnett embroiled in a heated playoff chase this August, Braves leadoff batter Mallex Smith hit .336 for the month and led the International League with 41 hits, 13 stolen bases, three triples, and 24 runs scored.  There were thirteen games in August in which Smith collected multiple hits.  The G-ÂBraves table setter scored at least one run in seventeen games, with his club going 12-Â5 when Smith came around to score.  Smith first joined Gwinnett in late May, when he made his Triple-ÂA debut after having posted a .340 average in 57 games for Double-ÂA Mississippi.  He entered August with just 30 hits and a .231 batting average through his first 32 games with Gwinnett, but his hot bat over the past month bumped his average up over 50 points.  Since his arrival in the IL, Smith is 2nd in the League in stolen bases with 27.  He is Gwinnett's first IL Player of the Month since outfielder Stefan Gartrell was honored in May of 2012.  22-Âyear-Âold Mallex Smith is in his first season in the Atlanta organization after coming over from San Diego in the December trade for Justin Upton.  He split the 2014 season between low Class-ÂA Fort Wayne and high Class-ÂA Lake Elsinore, leading Minor League Baseball with 88 stolen bases.  He had not played above the Class-ÂA level prior to 2015.  Smith is a native of Tallahassee, Florida.Â
