Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks once again rode the strong play of goaltender Robby Nolan and their defensive corps to victory Friday night at Independence Events Center. Mike Berry would prove to be the hero in the end for the Mavericks, as his overtime goal lifted the Mavericks to a 2-1 victory over the Colorado Eagles.
The game started off with end to end action from both teams. The Mavs were the first to strike when Ray DiLauro blasted home a shot from the point that trickled through goaltender Andrew Penner's legs, putting the Mavs up 1-0. Getting assists on the goal were Simon Watson and Derek Knowles. The assist by Knowles was his first point of the season. The Mavs and Eagles would fail to score for the rest of the period and the game went into the break with the Mavericks leading 1-0.
Robby Nolan took center stage in the second period, stopping 14 Colorado shots and not yielding a single goal to the opposition. Equally as impressive was Penner in the Eagles' net, stopping all 10 second period shots by the Mavs. After the period was over, Nolan had not allowed a goal in over 103 minutes of play.
The Eagles were baffled by Nolan for nearly the entire 60 minutes of regulation play until Adam Hogg broke behind the Mavericks defense. Hogg beat Nolan glove side on the breakaway and tied the game at one with just over six minutes remaining in the game. Nolan finished regulation with 31 saves on 32 shots. Penner stopped 20 of 21 Mavs' attempts in the 60 minutes.
The two teams skated to overtime after a winner was not determined in regulation. The Mavericks were granted a power play two minutes into the overtime when Riley Nelson hauled down Mike Berry in front of the net. According to CHL, minor penalties cannot exceed one minute in overtime. So with not much time to spare, the Mavs power play went to work. Mike Berry found a pass from Ryan Jardine behind the net and put it over Penner's shoulder to seal the victory for the Mavericks.
The Mavs finished the night one-for-two on the power play. The Eagles were held goalless with a man advantage, going zero-for-three on the power play. Adam Hogg's goal at 13:54 of the third period broke Nolan's shutout streak of 125:28. Hogg was also the last player to score on Nolan before his shutout streak began. The Mavs now sit at 23-17-4 on the season, tied for fifth place in the Turner Conference with rival Wichita Thunder.
Missouri now heads to Loveland, Colorado for the final two games of this three-game weekend set. After games on Saturday and Sunday in Colorado, the Mavs head to Oklahoma on Tuesday to face the Tulsa Oilers on Tuesday night. The Mavs return home next weekend for a Friday matchup with the Rapid City Rush and a Saturday game against the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs. Tickets are available for all Mavericks' home games at the Independence Events Center Box Office, by calling (800) 745-3000 or visiting www.TicketMaster.com.
