Dayton Gems Weekend Preview
February 11, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Dayton Gems News Release
The Dayton Gems have had a quiet schedule over the past week because of the winter weather that hit much of the country. The team's only game last week came on Saturday, Feb. 5, at Quad City. Dayton scored three consecutive goals to give the Gems the 3-2 road win and snapped their four game losing streak.
Now, the quiet time is over for the Gems as they play three games this upcoming weekend, starting with a road match-up on Friday night at Evansville. Dayton will then play at Hara Arena for the remainder of the weekend with a game against Fort Wayne on Saturday and Quad City on Sunday.
Scouting Reports
Evansville
Emotions will be running high on Friday when the Gems take on the IceMen. The two teams finalized a trade on Monday just minutes before the CHL trading deadline of 4 p.m. EST. The Gems acquired Damian Surma from Evansville in exchange for rookie forward Erik Boisvert. Both players will make their debut against their former team.
Friday's game will be just the second one for the IceMen since Jan. 29. The last time Evansville took the ice was on Feb. 3, when they lost 5-1 to Bossier-Shreveport. They were outshot 47-23 in the game and scored their lone goal of the game in the second period on a powerplay. However, that goal came from Surma, a player the team no longer has.
Playing Evansville has been a rollercoaster ride for the Gems this season. The two teams have met nine times this season and the Gems have come out on top five times. The Gems recorded a season high eight goals against the IceMen back on Dec. 31, but lost their latest match-up 5-4 in a shootout.
Fort Wayne
After playing each other five times between Dec. 18 - Jan. 1, this will be just the second time Dayton and the Komets have faced-off since Jan. 8.
Despite spending much of the season at the bottom of the Turner Conference standings, Fort Wayne has been a thorn in the side of Gems this season. The Komets have won four of the last six games against the Gems, including the last two matchups back in January.
In addition to having success against the Gems this season, the Komets have been having a lot of success against most of their opponents over the past three weeks. Fort Wayne is currently riding a six-game winning streak and has won seven of its last eight games. In the last three games, the Komets have scored five goals or more in each contest. Their biggest triumph during their winning streak came on Wednesday when the Komets defeated Bloomington 7-1.
Quad City
When the Gems played just one game between Jan. 31 to Feb. 11, this was the team Dayton played. After falling behind 1-0 to the Mallards in the first period, Dayton scored three unanswered goals en route to the 3-2 victory. Despite the loss, Quad City has still won three of its last five games. In all three wins, the Mallards have had some offensive support as they recorded at least three goals in each of the games.
Eric Giosa has both played a key role for the Mallards over the past five games. Giosa recorded a hat trick against Evansville on Jan. 28 and has recorded eight points in the past five games.
The Kettering Medical Center is proud to be the official title sponsor of the Gems for the 2010-11 season.
