BLOOMINGTON, IL - The Mississippi RiverKings of the Central Hockey League open a weekend road trip to Bloomington, Illinois tonight to meet the PrairieThunder. Game time tonight is at 7:05 PM and broadcast coverage is available on Sports 56, WHBQ-AM at 6:50 PM with Bob Bakken calling the action from the U.S. Cellular Coliseum.
The road trip continues tomorrow night with a 7:35 PM clash between the RiverKings and Tulsa Oilers at the BOK Center in Tulsa, then the RiverKings return home to play the Wichita Thunder in a Sunday afternoon matinee at 3:05 PM at Southaven's DeSoto Civic Center.
Mississippi was shut out by the Missouri Mavericks 1-0 on Tuesday, February 8th at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven. After a scoreless first period, Mike Berry netted a shorthanded goal just 61 seconds into the middle session for Missouri, a goal that became the only scoring in the contest. The RiverKings out shot the Mavericks 25-21 for the game and was 0-for-5 on the power play. Alexander Pechurskiy made 20 saves in goal for the RiverKings in the loss, the third time Mississippi had been shut out this season.
Tuesday ¬â¢s game against Missouri was the final game in a season longest nine-game home stand for the RiverKings, a home stand which resulted in a 4-4-1 record. Tonight ¬â¢s contest is the first one away from home for the RiverKings since January 16th, when Fort Wayne handled Mississippi 6-1. In the final 19 games of the regular season, Mississippi is not home any longer than for two consecutive games and will not have anything past a three-game road trip to Arizona the first week of March. Tonight is the first of 12 remaining road games for the RiverKings.
Mississippi forward Jeff Christian is expected to appear in his 1,300th career professional game tonight in Bloomington. Christian has been playing professional hockey since appearing with the Utica Devils in the American Hockey League in the 1990-91 campaign. Since then, the native of Burlington, Ontario has played in the National Hockey League, International Hockey League, in Europe, and has played in the Central Hockey League since coming to the now-defunct Youngstown SteelHounds in the 2005-06 season. Of his 1,300 games, 18 have been in the NHL with New Jersey, Pittsburgh, and Phoenix, 346 appearances have been in the CHL with Youngstown, Tulsa, Missouri, and all 46 games this season with the RiverKings. Jeff is four points short of 500 career points in the CHL, currently at 185 goals and 311 assists in six CHL campaigns.
Louis Dumont is poised to reach 300 career RiverKings games this weekend, as he is expected to reach that level tomorrow night in Tulsa. Dumont has been with the RiverKings since the 2006-07 season and last year reached 1,000 career professional games. R.G. Flath scored a goal in his 200th career pro contest on Saturday night vs. Tulsa. In 201 games, Flath has 52 goals and 108 points, including 12 goals this season with the RiverKings. Andrew Lackner is three points short of 100 career pro points, now at 21 goals and 76 assists for his pro career. Lackner joins Russell Smith as RiverKings who have played with the PrairieThunder. Lackner was with Bloomington when the team was in the United Hockey League, Lackner played in the International Hockey League.
Mississippi is 8-0-0 in home games when leading after two periods, but is winless on the road when trailing after forty minutes (0-10-0)..... Tuesday night marked the first time the RiverKings had won or lost more than one game in a row since January 15th, when the RiverKings claimed its second straight win with a 5-3 victory at Evansville. Mississippi has not lost three in a row since falling to Bloomington, Allen, and Fort Wayne in succession between December 22nd and 29th.
