Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release

WICHITA, Kansas- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (18-24-6) scored three shorthanded goals on their way to a 5-3 victory over the Wichita Thunder (23-17-4) on Friday night. Aaron Lewicki scored a pair of the shorthanded goals while Zak McClellan scored his second ‘shortie' of the season. The Killer Bees matched a season high five-goals while firing a season low 17 shots on net.

The Wichita Thunder scored the first goal of the game at 12:01 of the first period as Troy Schwab one-timed a Lance Galbraith pass from the top of the crease beating Juliano Pagliero five-hole. Travis Wight picked up the secondary assist.

The Thunder held a one-goal lead and proceeded to have a two-man advantage at 12:44 with both Bo Cheesman and Kyle Radke in the box. As Wichita was setting up the power-play Zak McClellan picked off a D-to-D pass and skated from his own blue line on a breakaway and backhanded a shot past Marc-Antoine Gelinas to tie the game at one. For McClellan it marks his second shorthanded goal of the season and also gives him the Killer Bees all-time record for shorthanded goals at nine.

The Killer Bees would score the second shorthanded goal of the game in the second period as Aaron Lewicki scored his 15th goal of the season. Nick Sucharski took a Darcy Campbell clearing pass and drove towards the net. After Gelinas turned away the first shot Lewicki cleared up the rebound for the go-ahead goal.

Halfway through the second period Bo Cheesman would score his second goal as a Killer Bee with a wrist shot rocket from the hash-mark closest to the net. The shot was so hard it bounced in and out off the back iron without the goal light turning on but referee Ryan Hersey was on top of the action and made the call.

After two periods of play despite leading 3-1 the Bees were being outshot 27-13.

The third period would be an offensive showcase with each team registering a pair of goals including the Bees third shorthanded goal of the night.

Wichita opened the third period scoring at 6:05 of the third with a Matt Robinson goal with assists to AJ Gale and Andrew Martens. One minute after the goal Kyle Radke was whistled for slashing sending the Bees shorthanded once again. Much like previous penalty kills the Killer Bees would be the one to take the advantage as Aaron Lewicki scored his second shorthanded goal of the game at 7:46.

Wichita cut the lead to one goal at 8:42 of the third scoring on the power-play when Mike Looby finally beat Pagliero with Radke still in the box.

The Killer Bees would add the final goal of the game at 12:32 of the third period as Dan Gendur netted his 10th strike of the season from the slot. Gendur took the feed from Tomas Klempa and ripped a shot from the slot glove side beating Gelinas.

The Wichita power-play finished 1 of 7 while allowing three power-play goals and the Bees power-play went 0 for 3.

The Killer Bees play the second leg of their three-in-three against the Texas Brahmas at the NYTEX Sprots Centre. Faceoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday night.
