Colorado Eagles News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - The Missouri Mavericks defeated the Colorado Eagles, 2-1, in overtime in the first of three games in as many days between the two teams. Robby Nolan nearly earned his second shutout in a row for the Mavs on the way to topping Andrew Penner, who was making his first start since Jan. 23.
The teams played a spirited first period with Colorado out-shooting Missouri 7-6. The Mavericks, however, were the only team to get a goal, as they converted a chance with an extra attacker while the Eagles hit three posts. The frame's only goal came at 10:23 when Simon Watson dug the puck out of the left corner of the offensive zone and found Ray DiLauro for a shot from high in the left circle that beat Penner.
The game's second segment brought another intense period of play with neither team finding the back of the net. Nolan stopped all 14 shots that came his way, and Penner stopped all 10 Mavs shots at the other end of the ice.
The Eagles again out-shot Missouri, 13-5, in the third period, but Nolan remained tough to crack and was approaching his second consecutive 1-0 shutout. But at 13:54, a series of end-to-end play resulted in Adam Hogg tying the game at 1 with a breakaway goal. After Scott May broke up a rush in his own end with a diving effort, Daymen Rycroft sent a lead pass to Hogg coming off the bench for a goal that would send the contest to overtime.
Just over one minute into the extra session, Colorado was called for a penalty that would prove costly when Mike Berry netted the game-winner less than a minute later. Needing to just win the faceoff outside their zone and dump the puck down ice to kill the remainder of the penalty, the Eagles failed to control the faceoff and Missouri worked it into the zone down the left wing and behind the net before Ryan Jardine sent a pass to Berry in front for the winning score.
The two teams will bus overnight to Northern Colorado where they will meet again Saturday and Sunday night at the Budweiser Events Center.
