Kansas City Mavericks News Release

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - Things couldn't get more frustrating for the Missouri Mavericks Friday night at Independence Events Center as they took on the Mississippi RiverKings. The Mavericks never got many chances on net and were shutout by the RiverKings and goaltender Larry Sterling, 3-0.

The RiverKings opened up the scoring on a Patrik Levesque goal six minutes into the game. Louis Dumont and Nathan Lutz both registered assists on the goal. The Mavs allowed 12 shots in the first period. Robby Nolan was strong in net, stopping 11 of the 12 shots. The Mavs could only muster eight shots on goal in the period and Larry Sterling answered every Mavericks chance.

Mississippi tightened their lead halfway through the second period on a goal from Brennan Sarazin. Chris Auger and Russell Smith were credited with assists on the goal. The Mavs were given a chance to get back in the game with four minutes left in the period. After a slashing penalty to Levesque and an interference penalty to Lutz, the Mavs would have a two-man advantage for over a minute and a half. The Mavs were unable to capitalize on the opportunity and went into the second intermission down two goals. The RiverKings once again held the edge on the Mavericks in the shot department, outshooting Missouri 13-11 in the period.

The third period would all be about the preservation of Mississippi goaltender Larry Sterling's shutout, as Sterling had stopped all 19 Mavericks shots heading into the third period. Sterling held the fort and earned his first shutout of the season. The RiverKings added an empty netter by Darrell Stoddard to seal the 3-0 victory. Sterling's shutout was just the second time in Mavericks' franchise history that the team was shutout and the first time this season the Mavs failed to score a goal.

Lost in the shuffle was Robby Nolan, who stopped 32 of 34 shots. Sterling finished the night with 23 saves on all 23 Missouri shots and was voted the number one star in the game.

The Mavericks keep the second half of the season rolling tomorrow night at Independence Events Center in a crucial tilt with the Turner Conference leading Rapid City Rush. Tickets are available at the Independence Events Center Box Office, by calling (800) 745-3000 or visiting www.TicketMaster.com . Visit www.MissouriMavericks.com for more information.
