Dayton Gems News Release

Sometimes, one period can make all the difference in hockey.

That was the case for the Dayton Gems on Friday, January 14. The Gems exploded for three goals in the second period of their 4-2 win over Bloomington.

It's the second time the Gems have scored three goals in a period since the turn of the New Year. On January 1, the Gems scored three goals in the opening period against Fort Wayne in a 4-3 shootout loss.

The win on Friday was a big one for Dayton. It snapped a three game losing streak.

After falling behind 0-1 in the first period, Mike Vaskivuo got the ball rolling for the Gems in the second. Vaskivuo recorded a goal midway through the second period to tie the game at 1-1. Jonathan Ornelas broke the tie with his tenth goal of the season to give the Gems a 2-1 lead.

Kyle Bochek rounded out the scoring for the Gems in the second with a goal in the closing minutes of the period.

The PrairieThunder were able to pull to within one in the third period, but Vaskivuo was able to follow-up with his second goal of the game to give the Gems the 4-2 win.

The victory improves the Gems' record to 17-13-3 for the season.

Dayton's next game will be on Saturday, January 15 at Quad City. The puck will drop at 8:05 p.m. Boston's Bistro on Main Street will be having a watch party for fans to enjoy while the Gems are on the road.

The Kettering Medical Center is proud to be the official title sponsor of the Gems for the 2010-11 season.
