Allen Americans News Release
Fresh off of the CHL's All-Star Break, the Allen Americans started off the second half of the season with a 3-0 victory over the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs in front of 3,923 at the Allen Event Center tonight.
The opening period saw lots of early action including fights by Kip Brennan and Justin DaCosta, but remained scoreless until the 19:38 mark of the frame when Brennan's wrister beat Brian Foster five-hole to give the Americans a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission. The tally was Brennan's fifth of the season.
Chris Whitley, who was in-between the pipes for the first time since November 26, was stellar in net for Allen in the first period stopping all thirteen shots he faced.
Tobias Whelan extended the Americans lead to 2-0 9:33 into the second period with a wrap-around goal that found it's way past an out of position Foster. Colton Yellow Yorn and Erik Adams were credited with the assists on the play.
The Americans struck again with a powerplay goal from Nino Musitelli with 1:49 remaining in the period, giving them a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes of play. The goal was Musitelli's 18th of the season and third in the past five games.
The third period would see no scoring from either side, despite a combined eighteen shots on goal.
Chris Whitley finished the evening with twenty-nine saves on twenty-nine shots and was named the game's first star.
With the win, the Americans improve to 6-1 on the season against the second place Mudbugs and continue to lead the Berry Conference and the Central Hockey League with 51 points (25-7-1).
The Americans homestand continues tomorrow night against the Laredo Bucks at 7:00 PM. Allen will then close-out their weekend schedule on Monday afternoon with a battle against the Arizona Sundogs at 1:00 PM.
