Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
ALLEN, TX - Making his first start since late November, goaltender Chris Whitley stopped all 29 shots he faced as the Allen Americans shut out the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs 3-0 Friday night at the Allen Event Center. The loss drops the Mudbugs 21-13-1 this year and 1-6-0 against Allen.
The ¬ËBugs outshot the Americans 29-28 in the contest, but finished 0 for 4 on the powerplay and were shut out for the second time this season. Justin Aikins, Brett Smith and Dave Pszenyczny all missed the game with injuries and Jeff Kyrzakos left after the first period and did not return. After spending over a month on injured reserve, Whitley set the tone early with 13 first-period saves on the way to his first shutout of the season.
The Mudbugs came away with 13 shots on goal compared with just seven for Allen in the opening frame, which also saw a heavyweight bout between James DeLory of the ¬ËBugs and former NHLer Kip Brennan of the Amerks. Allen then opened the scoring with just 23 seconds left in the period as Brennan knocked a loose puck off David Rutherford ¬â¢s stick and through Brian Foster ¬â¢s legs to make it 1-0 after one.
Tobias Whelan extended the lead midway through the second period, depositing a rebound chance after Foster had made an excellent initial save. After two more fights saw Steven Crampton challenge Brennan and DeLory take on David Simoes, Nino Musitelli tapped in a powerplay rebound at 18:11 to make it 3-0 Allen through 40 minutes.
Whitley then finished off the shutout with seven saves on the frustrated Mudbugs in the third period. Tempers boiled over twice more in the final stanza as Michael Couch fought Liam Huculak and David Rutherford dropped the gloves with Greg Gallagher during the course of the third.
Brian Foster (8-7-0) stopped 25 shots but suffered his sixth loss in his last seven starts, while Whitley improved his record to 9-3-0 with the win. The Americans converted one of three powerplay opportunities.
Next up for the Mudbugs is another road contest tomorrow night in Tulsa against the Oilers. Opening faceoff is set for 7:35 pm at the BOK Center, with radio coverage starting at 7:15 on News Radio 710 AM KEEL . The game will also be shown live online on CHL-TV.
