
A Sterling Shutout as Mississippi Blanks Missouri

INDEPENDENCE, MO --- Mississippi RiverKings goaltender Larry Sterling posted his first shutout of the season as the RiverKings blanked the Missouri Mavericks 3-0 on Friday, January 14th. Sterling (8-6-1) posted 23 saves as the RiverKings opened the post-All-Star Game part of the regular season on a winning note, and won for the third straight time against the Mavericks.
Mississippi took the early lead in the contest with Patrik Levesque's backhander from in front of the Missouri net went in at 6:19 of the first period for a 1-0 RiverKings lead. The goal was Levesque's 12th as a RiverKing and 13th of the season,
Then, in the second period, the RiverKings took a 2-0 lead on Brennan Sarazin's third goal of the season. The marker at 9:47 gives Sarazin a goal in three straight games. Mississippi held strong the rest of the way in the middle frame for the two-goal advantage going into the third period of action.
There was no further scoring until Missouri pulled its goaltender for an extra attacker and Darrell Stoddard converted an empty net goal with 24 seconds remaining for the final 3-0 score.
Neither team scored on the power and both teams were 0-for-6 for the night. The RiverKings outshot the Mavericks 35-23. Robby Nolan of Missouri made 32 saves, but saw his record fall to 12-7-2 for the season.
With the win, Mississippi moved to 17-17-1 for the season, while Missouri dropped to 18-12-3 for the year.
Next action for the RiverKings will be Saturday, January 15th, when the RiverKings play at Evansville at 7:35 PM. They'll finish another five-game road trip on Sunday, January 16th in a 4 PM (Central time) game at Fort Wayne.
Broadcast coverage for all weekend games will be available on Sports 56, WHBQ-AM and www.sports56whbq.com at 7:20 PM Saturday, and Sunday at 3:45 PM. Fans can also watch the game on CHL-TV.
Next home action for the RiverKings will be on Tuesday, January 18th, against the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs at the DeSoto Civic Center. Game time is 7:05 PM and Hockey For Humanity is the night's featured non-profit MVP.
