Kansas City Mavericks News Release
LAREDO, Texas - The Missouri Mavericks fell to the Laredo Bucks, 4-2, Friday night at Laredo Entertainment Center. Laredo scored a pair of shorthanded goals in the first period and it proved to be the difference as the Mavericks fell to 32-20-6. Brian Matte had a pair of goals for Laredo and goaltender Torrie Jung stopped 31 of 33 shots for the Bucks. Ryan Jardine and Toby Lafrance scored goals for the Mavericks who will travel to Rio Grande Valley for a game Saturday night before heading home for a Playoff Launch Party on Monday, March 14 at Independence Square.
"A couple of huge mistakes in the first killed us," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "The boys fought all night; they had great penalty killing, but the shorthanded goals were the difference."
The Mavericks jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Ryan Jardine's 19th goal of the season. He took a nice feed from Nick Sirota and buried a forehand from the doorstep to give the Mavericks the lead.
Missouri's power play allowed the next two goals as the Bucks scored a pair of shorthanded goals. Brian Matte scored the first of his two goals on an unassisted breakaway at the 7:21 mark to tie the game 1-1. The Mavericks earned another power play goal late in the first period, but again it was the Bucks who scored on Justin Styffe's goal at 16:56 of the first. Laredo held the 2-1 lead for the final three minutes, but it was the Mavericks who had the edge in shots at 12-11.
The Bucks extended their lead in the second period to 3-1 by scoring the only goal of the period. Matte netted his second of the game at the 7:57 mark. Laredo held the two-goal lead as the teams headed into the third period.
Missouri battled back and made it a one-goal game with 5:34 remaining in regulation when Toby Lafrance connected on a pass from Steven Later. The Mavericks continued to battle until Keegan Dansereau scored an empty netter with 45 seconds remaining in the game.
Neither team was able to score on the power play as the Mavericks finished 0-for-2 and the Bucks were 0-for-4. Missouri outshot Laredo 33-29. The game marked the Mavericks third regulation loss in their last 16 games (11-3-2).
The Mavericks head to Rio Grande Valley to take on the Killer Bees Saturday night. The team will return from south Texas for their Playoff Launch Party on Monday, March 14 before heading to Bloomington for a game on Wednesday, March 16 against the PrairieThunder. Missouri will return home for a four-game home stand where they will face the Wichita Thunder on March 18 and 19, the Mississippi RiverKings on March 20 and wrap up the home schedule against the Thunder on March 22.
