Laredo Bucks News Release


LAREDO, TX- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League beat the Missouri Mavericks 4-2 Friday night at Laredo Energy Arena. Laredo's win, coupled with Rio Grande Valley's loss to Arizona, puts the Bucks two points behind the Killer Bees for the final playoff spot in the Berry Conference. The Bucks improve to 21-30-8 (50 points).

Brian Matte scored two goals and Torrie Jung stopped 31 of 33 shots he faced to help give the Bucks their first win ever against the Mavericks (1-1-1).

Missouri falls to 11-3-2 in their last 16 games.

The Mavericks jumped out in front of the Bucks to take a 1-0 lead at the 6:39 mark of the first when Toby LaFrance scored from the left circle on an odd-man rush. The goal was LaFrance's 14th of the season.

The Bucks would score two shorthanded goals in a span of nine minutes to take a 2-1 lead after the first period. The Bucks had just three shorthanded goals in the first 58 games of the season.

Matte tied the game at 1-1 when he scored a shorthanded breakaway goal at the 7:21 mark of the first. The goal was Matte's 11th of the season and his second shorthanded tally.

Laredo would again strike shorthanded to take a 2-1 lead with 3:04 left in the first when Justin Styffe beat out two Missouri defenders for the puck and stuffed in a shot from the slot. The goal was Styffe's ninth of the season.

Missouri outshot Laredo 12-11 in the first period.

The Bucks would increase their lead to 3-1 at the 7:57 mark of the second when Matte jammed in a rebound from the left side of the crease to net his second of the night and his 12th of the season.

Laredo outshot Missouri 12-9 in the second period.

LaFrance scored his second of the night to cut Laredo's lead to 3-2 with 5:34 left in the third period.

Laredo went up 4-2 with 45 seconds left in the third when Keegan Dansereau scored an empty-netter from just over the blue line. The goal was Dansereau's third goal in seven games for the Bucks.

The Bucks are 17-1-2 this season when scoring four or more goals in a game.

The Bucks were outshot in the third period 12-6 and for the game 33-29.

Robby Nolan stopped 25 of 28 shots in the Mavericks net.

Terry Ruskowski is one game away from tying Gary Unger for fifth-place in CHL history with 568 games coached.

*GRENVILLE HALL OF FAME NIGHT SATURDAY*

The Bucks will induct two-time CHL All-Star Chris Grenville as the first member of the Bucks Hall of Fame on March 12th when the Bucks host Arizona at Laredo Energy Arena. The first 1,000 fans to enter the LEA will receive a FREE Chris Grenville Hall of Fame replica plaque.

In October Grenville received the most votes out of all of the Bucks' Legends who were eligible to make the Hall of Fame. The voting was comprised of the Bucks fan vote on Legends Night and Bucks front office staff.

Grenville, with his family on hand, will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at a special ceremony during the game that night.

Grenville is one of the greatest players in Laredo Bucks history. Grenville, an original Buck, played three seasons in Laredo from 2002-2004 and 2005-06 and helped lead the franchise to two CHL President's Cup Championships.
