Thunder Throttle RiverKings in Wichita

WICHITA, KS --- The Wichita Thunder broke open a tie game in the second period and went on to defeat the Mississippi RiverKings 5-2 in Central Hockey League action Friday night in Wichita.

Mississippi rallied late in the first period to tie the game at 1-1 with less than four minutes remaining in the period. Chris Auger was credited for his 11th goal of the year when his shot hit the bottom of the crossbar and was ruled a goal after a discussion between the referee and goal judge.

Aaron Davis opened the scoring for Wichita with a goal at 8:54 of the period.

Wichita took a 3-1 lead in the second period on a pair of Matt Robinson goals, before Chris Richards answered at 13:23 with his 18th goal of the season for a 3-2 Wichita lead at the second intermission.

In the third period, Dustin Donaghy snuck one by goaltender Alexander Pechurskiy for his 13th goal of the season and a 4-2 lead at 14:23, followed by Jesse Bennefield finishing the contest with an empty net goal with 45 seconds remaining for the final score.

Neither team scored on the power play, as the RiverKings finished 0-for-3 and the Thunder went 0-for-5. However, the Thunder had the advantage on the "shot clock" by a margin of 43-28.

Pechurskiy finished with 38 saves as his record fell to 14-12-2. Wichita goalie Marc-Antoine Gelinas stopped 26 shots in posting the victory (24-11-5).
