Martens Named Finalist for Prestigious Award

WICHITA, KS- Wichita Thunder defenseman Andrew Martens has been named a finalist for the Central Hockey League's 2011 Most Outstanding Defenseman Award.

Martens is joined by Darcy Campbell (Rio Grande Valley), Frankie DeAngelis (Fort Wayne), Derek Eastman (Tulsa), and Jason Krischuk (Texas).

Martens enters Friday third among CHL blue liners in both goals (14) and points (48). The 29-year old Martens has played in 55 games and has a plus/minus rating of +7.

Prior to this season, the sixth-year pro had spent his entire career at the ECHL and AHL levels. On February 5th at Fort Wayne, Martens became the first defenseman to score four goals in a game since the CHL's merger with the WPHL. The Alberta native has strung together three point streaks this season of at least five games.

Martens played three seasons of college hockey at Bemidji State University before turning pro in late 2006 with the ECHL's Greenville Grrrowl. Including this year, Martens has scored at least 30 points in five straight seasons.

Balloting for the league's annual awards will take place among CHL Head Coaches, team Communications Departments, and select members of the media.
