WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Thunder defeated the Mississippi RiverKings 5-2 at the INTRUST Bank Arena on Friday night.
Matt Robinson and Aaron Davis each had three points as the Thunder improved to 4-1-0 in the month of March.
Robinson scored twice in the second to help Wichita build a 3-2 lead. With the game tied at 1-1, Robinson won a foot race to a loose puck in front of the crease and then beat RiverKings' goaltender Alexander Pechurskiy with a deke to his left. Robinson made it 3-1 at 9:32, re-directing Aaron Davis' shot from the point through Pechurskiy's five-hole. Chris Richards cut the lead to 3-2 at 13:23, converting a rebound to right of Marc-Antoine Gelinas.
Dustin Donaghy gave the Thunder some breathing room at the 14:23 mark in the third, beating Pechurskiy five-hole with a slapshot from halfway down the left boards. Jesse Bennefield put the game away with an empty netter at 19:16.
Wichita opened a 1-0 lead at 8:54 in the first when Aaron Davis tipped in a rebound behind the left side of Pechurskiy. A.J. Gale started the play off the right boards and passed to Matt Robinson in the slot who took the initial shot. Chris Auger was credited with a goal at 16:10 in the first, backhanding a high shot that rang under the crossbar and then into the net.
Gelinas was 26 of 28 for the win. Pechurskiy was 38 of 42 in the loss. The Thunder was 0 for 5 on the power play while Mississippi was 0 for 3.
