Indianapolis Indians News Release
DES MOINES, Iowa - A two-run seventh inning in which Iowa failed to record a hit lifted the Cubs past the Indianapolis Indians on Thursday night, 7-3. The loss marked Indy's second of the six-game series and dropped the Indians back to .500 on the season.
With the game tied at three in the bottom of the seventh inning, two walks and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for the I-Cubs (11-9) with one out. Nathan Kirby (L, 0-1) induced a tailor-made double play to second baseman Rodolfo Castro, but a throwing error by Castro on the turn to first allowed Ildemaro Vargas and Jared Young to score, giving the I-Cubs the lead for good, 5-3.
Iowa extended its lead in the bottom of the eighth on a solo home run off the bat of John Hicks and an RBI double from Esteban Quiroz to cap the scoring.
The Indians (10-10) and I-Cubs were mirror images on the scoreboard in the second and fifth frames, with each team scoring one run in the second and two runs in the fifth.
Heavy-hitting first baseman Mason Martin started the scoring in the second inning with a towering home run to right field for his fourth long ball of the season and 16th extra-base hit, the latter being the most by any player in professional baseball. The knock also extended Martin's hit streak to five games.
With the game tied at one run apiece in the top of the fifth inning, Indians catcher Taylor Davis roped an RBI single to right to score Canaan Smith-Njigba. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Castro was hit-by-pitch in the first pitch of his at-bat to make it a 3-1 game. The I-Cubs tied the game again in the bottom of the inning courtesy of a Young RBI single and a wild pitch.
Max Kranick toed the rubber for his second rehab start with Indianapolis and tossed 3.0 innings, allowing one hit and one unearned run with a pair of strikeouts. Kirby yielded two hits, two runs (one earned) and three walks with three punchouts in 2.2 innings of relief.
Stephen Gonsalves (W, 1-0) went 2.1 scoreless innings for the I-Cubs, surrendering just one hit while striking out four.
The Indians will look to even the series in tomorrow's 8:08 PM ET matchup at Principal Park. RHP Cody Bolton (0-1, 5.19) will make his fifth appearance (third start) for Indianapolis this season against RHP Alec Mills (0-1, 9.00).
