Marlies Win Both Road Games Over Weekend In Dramatic Fashion

Opponents This Week:

(Dec. 13): The Marlies play their fourth of eight meetings against the Lake Erie Monsters - AHL affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche - on Friday night at Ricoh Coliseum. The Monsters have beaten Toronto in their first three match-ups so far this season, including most recently, 3-2 on November 29 at Quicken Loans Arena. The Monsters currently sit in sixth place in the North Division with a 7-11-1-2 record for 17 points. Brian Willsie paces the Monsters with 14 points (eight goals, six assists) and Jesse Boulerice has a team-high 55 penalty minutes. Last season the Marlies owned a 6-1-0-1 record against Lake Erie. Pogge started seven of the eight meetings last season, earning a record of 5-1-1 with a 2.54 goals-against average. Darryl Boyce scored the Marlies first shorthanded goal of the season in their first matchup of the season on Sunday, October 12.

(Dec. 14): The Marlies face the Syracuse Crunch - AHL affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets - on Saturday night for the second time this season. Toronto lost their previous matchup, 5-1 in Syracuse on November 28. The Marlies defeated the Crunch in Game 7, advancing to the Western Conference Finals last year. This will be the second of eight meetings between the Marlies and Crunch this season. Syracuse currently ranks fourth in the North Division with a 14-9-0-1 record for 29 points through 24 games. They are 8-1-0-0 on home ice this season and 4-6-0-0 in their past 10 games overall. Mike York leads all Crunch players with 20 points (five goals, 15 assists) and Clay Wilson has a team-high eight goals. Jon Mirasty ranks first on the Crunch and third in the AHL with 103 penalty minutes. Nikita Filatov was selected sixth overall by the Blue Jackets in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft and scored his first career NHL goal in his first game on Oct. 17 versus Nashville. Filatov played for Russia in the 2008 World Jr. Championships. He tallied nine points in seven games and helped lead Russia to a bronze medal. Filatov has notched five points (two goals, three assists) in his past five games.

(Dec. 15): The Marlies play their fifth of 12 meetings against their provincial-rival, the Hamilton Bulldogs - AHL affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens - on Sunday afternoon at Ricoh Coliseum. The Marlies are 2-1-0-1 against the Bulldogs this season, including their 6-5 overtime win last Sunday. Darryl Boyce scored the winning goal in overtime on a penalty shot to cap a three-goal comeback victory. Jeremy Williams has three goals, including an overtime winner in two games against Hamilton this season. The Bulldogs currently rank second in the North Division with a 15-8-2-0 record for 32 points this season. They own an 8-3-1-0 record away from Copps Coliseum this season. Their 95 goals for rank second only to Hershey's 114. Bulldogs starting goalie Marc Denis ranks first in the AHL with 12 wins. Kyle Chipchura was chosen in the first round (18th overall) by Montreal in the 2004 Entry Draft. He played alongside Justin Pogge as the captain of the Gold Medal 2006 Canadian World Junior team. Chipchura is currently on a five-game point streak. Yanick Lehoux currently ranks sixth in the AHL with 28 points. Dan Jancevski picked up his first goal of the season in Hamilton's 5-4 loss on Thursday night versus Milwaukee. The Marlies hold a 24-13-0-3 all-time advantage over their QEW-rival.

MARLIES HEADLINES:

Jiri Powering It Up: Jiri Tlusty has scored a goal in each of his past three games. On Sunday versus the Hamilton Bulldogs, Tlusty scored a goal and added an assist with both points coming on the power play. In 16 games this season, the Slany, CZE native has collected 11 points (five goals, six assists) with nine of those points coming on the man- advantage. Tlusty has also appeared in nine games this season with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Boyce Leading the Boys: Darryl Boyce recorded two goals and an assist, including the overtime winning penalty shot goal in the Marlies 6-5 comeback victory on Sunday against the Hamilton Bulldogs. Boyce's overtime goal was the first time an AHL game has been decided by a penalty shot since April 1, 2006 (Hamilton vs. Manchester). The Summerside, PEI native leads the Marlies with 67 penalty minutes. In 23 games this season, Boyce has racked up 11 points (six goals, five assists). He leads the team and ranks second (tie) in the AHL with two shorthanded goals.

Tim Becoming a Staple: Tim Stapleton has recorded at least a point in five of his past six games (one goal, six assists). In his past 10 games he's recorded 13 points (three goals, 10 assists), including four multi-point games. On Sunday, he recorded a season-high three assists. The Oak Park, Illinois native ranks second on the Marlies and second in the AHL (tie) with 12 power play assists. In 23 games this season, Stapleton has 22 points (four goals, 18 assists) including one game-winning tally.

Jimmy Two Times: On November 19, the Toronto Marlies announced Jim Hughes as the assistant coach of the club, replacing Doug Gilmour. Since Hughes' return, the Marlies have gone 7-3-0-0 in 10 games. Hughes was the Marlies assistant coach the previous two seasons (2006-08). Last season, the Bronx, New York native was responsible for the team's number one ranked penalty kill.

Pack Leader: Kris Newbury has potted 23 points over his past 18 games for the Marlies. During that stretch, he's scored six goals and added 17 assists. Newbury currently ranks first on the team in points, second in assists and fourth in penalty minutes. 13 of his 17 assists have come on the man-advantage, ranking first in the AHL. Newbury is the Marlies all-time leader in points (162), goals (56), assists (106), penalty minutes (429) and shorthanded goals (tie) with five.

Special Teams:

Power Play: The Toronto Marlies power play has clicked for 12 goals in their past nine games. On Sunday, the Marlies power play went an impressive 3-for-4 while on the man-advantage. Toronto's power play currently ranks fourth in the AHL with a 20.8% success rate. Their power play on the road ranks first overall at 28.3%. They've scored at least one power play goal in 10 of 12 road games. The Marlies have registered six, multi-power play goal games so far this season. Kris Newbury leads all Marlie skaters with 14 power play points. Williams has nine power play tallies and Newbury has 13 assists.

Penalty Kill: The AHL`s best penalty kill during the 2007-08 season, is a solid 59-for-71 (85.9%) killing penalties on home ice so far this season. Through 23 games, they rank 10th in the league with an 84.3% success rate. They've given up only 21 power play goals in 23 games. The Marlies have only allowed power play goals in 10 of their past 16 games. Darryl Boyce potted the Marlies first shorthanded tally of the season against Lake Erie on Oct. 12 to knot the game at 3-3 late in the third period. Alex Foster set a Marlies franchise record last season with five shorthanded goals.

Free Willy: Jeremy Williams has scored eight goals in his past 10 games, including the game-winning goal in overtime on Friday night against Grand Rapids. He ranks first in the American Hockey League with nine power play goals and is first on the Marlies with 11 tallies. He's scored two of Toronto's three overtime winning goals this season and has three game-winners. Williams is third on the team with 14 points. He is first on the Marlies with three game-winning goals. He is currently the Marlies all-time leader with 16 game winning goals and ranks second in team history with 23 power play tallies.

Munny In The Bank: Adam Munro shutout the Binghamton Senators on Friday, November 21 for his first shutout in a Marlies uniform. Munro made 25 saves in the victory and currently has a record of 2-3-0 and has a 2.94 goals-against average. He is the first Marlies goalie to earn a shutout on the road since Justin Pogge on October 27, 2006 in Grand Rapids.

Multi-Point Games: Kris Newbury has tallied five, three-point games so far this season. The Marlies all-time leading point scorer, notched three points (one goal, two assists) on Friday night in Grand Rapids. He was involved in all three of the Marlies goals, including the assist on Jeremy Williams' overtime winner. The only other players to record three- point nights are Andre Deveaux (three goals), Jeremy Williams (two goals, one assist) and Tim Stapleton (three assists).

Making Their Debut: The Marlies have dressed eight new players through their first 23 games this season. Defencemen Richard Petiot, Andy Schneider, Juha Uotila and Josef Boumedienne; forwards Andre Deveaux, Tim Stapleton and Mark Bell have all seen action in at least one game for the Marlies. Adam Munro made his Marlies debut on Sunday, October 19 in a relief effort, backing up Justin Pogge. Munro made 16 saves in the effort. Newcomer, Tim Stapleton scored the Marlies first goal of the 2008-09 season in the third period and also scored in the shootout on Friday night against the Binghamton Senators.

Unveiling the Banner: The Marlies opened up the 2008-09 season by unveiling their North Division championship banner from the year before. The Marlies won their division with a 50-21-3-6 record for 109 points, nine more points then next closest Syracuse (100 points). Toronto has 15 players that helped them to their title berth on the opening day roster.

Reading Report: The Toronto Maple Leafs ECHL affiliate, the Reading Royals currently rank seventh in the American Division with a 6-17-0-1 record for 13 points. Dan Rudisuela ranks sixth (tie) on the Royals in points with 12 (seven goals, five assists). Tyler Doig is first on Reading with six power play assists. Doig registered his first multi- goal game (two goals, one assist) on Friday night in Reading's 6-3 loss to Elmira. James Reimer has appeared in six games for Reading and has earned a record of 3-2-0. Maple Leafs prospect, Michael Ouzas who is currently playing for the Fresno Falcons (ECHL) has a record of 8-5-1 with a 2.39 goals-against average and 0.913 save percentage.

MARLIES QUICK HITS:

- Kris Newbury leads the team with 23 points (six goals, 17 assists). Tim Stapleton ranks second on the Marlies with 22 points (four goals, 18 assists). Jeremy Williams ranks third on the team in points with 14.

- Darryl Boyce leads the team with 67 penalty minutes and Phil Oreskovic leads the team with a plus-four rating.

- The Marlies are 9-0-0-0 when taking a lead into the third period this season and are 8-2-0-0 when they record the game's first goal.

- Jaime Sifers made his NHL debut last night for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He had 17:26 minutes of ice-time and was a plus-one. Jeremy Williams, who was also recalled this past weekend, scored a goal and recorded his first career NHL assist in the Maple Leafs 4-2 win over the NY Islanders. Williams was named the game's second star.

- Former Toronto Marlies goaltender Scott Clemmensen has sparkled for the New Jersey Devils since Martin Brodeur's injury. In 10 games this season with the Devils, he has a 6-3-0 record with a 2.32 goals-against average and 0.922 save percentage. Last season with the Marlies, Clemmensen posted a 23-14-2 record with a franchise-best, 0.910 save percentage.

- Andre Deveaux made his NHL debut on Thursday, November 27 against the Ottawa Senators. He became the first player from the Bahamas to ever skate in an NHL game. This season in 13 games with the Marlies he recorded eight points (six goals, two assists) and ranked first on the team with 54 penalty minutes before being called up.

- Former Toronto Marlies forward, John Mitchell registered his fifth assist on the game-winning goal in the Maple Leafs 3-1 victory over Los Angeles. In 23 games this season with the Leafs, Mitchell has recorded two goals and five assists.

- The Marlies play three games this week, all against division opponents. They host Lake Erie on Friday night at Ricoh Coliseum and then travel to Syracuse on Saturday to take on the Crunch. The Marlies end their weekend with a home contest against the QEW-rival, the Hamilton Bulldogs at 4:00 pm.

- The Marlies currently rank fifth in the North Division with an 11-10-0-2 record for 24 points through 23 games.

- The Marlies won the North Division last season with a record of 50-21-3-6 for 109 points. The 109 points set a Maple Leafs affiliate record.

RBK/AHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEE

For the week ending December 8, 2008, the Toronto Marlies nominated centre Darryl Boyce for consideration as the Rbk/AHL Player of the Week. The Summerside, PEI native had a career night on Sunday, scoring the game-winning goal in overtime against the Hamilton Bulldogs on a penalty shot. Boyce notched two goals, one assist and seven penalty minutes on Sunday afternoon, helping the Marlies erase two, three-goal deficits. In three games this past week, Boyce tallied two goals, two assists and had a plus-two rating.

IN THE COMMUNITY

The Marlies travel to Scarborough to the Heron Park Arena today to take part in their fourth of five community practices this season. The Marlies have a full team practice beginning at 7:00 p.m. and then one lucky minor hockey team will have the chance to hit the ice with the coaches and players. The night will end with a full team autograph session. IN THE BOOTH:

The Marlies and Rogers Cable TV announced their 29 game broadcast schedule, which will comprise of Friday, Saturday and Sunday home dates. The television play-by-play duties will be handled by the voice of the Marlies, John Bartlett, who returns for his fourth season with the organization. Former NHLer and Toronto Maple Leaf, Bob McGill, will join Bartlett in the booth for all 29 games.

The Marlies announced on Friday, October 10 in conjunction with the FAN 590, that all 80 regular season games will be live on the FAN 590. Marlies play-by-play announcer John Bartlett, along with colour commentator, Bob McGill will provide the live action for Marlies fans this season. Recap: The Marlies won their second consecutive game on Friday night in Grand Rapids with a 3-2 overtime win. Jiri Tlusty got the Marlies on the board two minutes into the second period while on the man-advantage. Kris Newbury and Jeremy Williams each picked up assists on Tlusty's third of the season. After the Griffins tied the game at 1-1, Newbury put Toronto back in front 2-1 with his sixth tally. Grand Rapids tied the game at 2-2 mid-way through the third period. In overtime, Williams received a pass from Newbury and snapped a shot from the slot to give the Marlies the victory. It was Williams' second overtime winner this season and third game-winning goal. Justin Pogge made 22 saves in the victory.

Recap: The Marlies lost only their second game of the season when they scored the game's first goal. Ben Ondrus got the Marlies on the board with under a minute remaining in the first period. After Milwaukee tied the game at 1-1 early in the second period, Jiri Tlusty put Toronto back on top 2-1 banging in a rebound while on the power play. After Tlusty's fourth of the season, it was all Milwaukee. The Admirals went on to score five unanswered goals to defeat the Marlies 6-2 at Ricoh Coliseum. Adam Munro got his first start at home this season and made 23 saves in the loss.

Recap: Darryl Boyce scored two goals, including the game-winning penalty shot OT winner to cap a three- goal comeback. After falling behind 2-0, Boyce got the Marlies on the board while on the power play. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 4-1, but Boyd Devereaux scored his fifth of the season with 22 seconds remaining in the second period to cut the lead. Hamilton opened the third period with a goal, but Jiri Tlusty responded less than a minute later to make it 5-3. Alex Foster scored his third of the season on the power play and Ben Ondrus tied the game at 5-5 with five minutes left in regulation time. In overtime, Boyce was awarded a penalty shot after being taken down on a breakaway. The Summerside, PEI native capitalized on the penalty shot, giving the Marlies the 6-5 victory. Justin Pogge won his third straight game and made 27 saves in the victory.
