Lynx Can\'t Find Points In Florida
December 20, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release
Augusta traveled to Florida for a weekend pair with the Everblades, but couldn't find points in dropping a pair of regulation losses 3-2 Friday and 5-2 Saturday.
Friday night, a scoreless first period gave way to an exciting second stanza, with the Lynx taking the lead on a Ken Magowan power play goal at 7:52 from Mike Sandbeck. Magowan drove to the front of the Everblades net after Sandbeck sent the faceoff his way, pushing the puck in between the legs of goaltender Rob Zepp. Following up the man advantage marker, the Lynx then notched a shorthanded goal at 10:27 with a beautiful set up from Jamie Johnson to Matt Dzieduszycki for a five-hole goal to make it 2-0. Florida stormed right back, notching a power play goal on the same advantage when Damian Surma banked a shot in off the back of a scrambling Matus Kostur at 11:42, followed by a Brent McDonald marker at 12:25 to forge a 2-2 tie after two periods of play.
Early chances for both teams would eventually lead to Keith Anderson's goal at 5:43, the third unanswered goal for the Everblades and eventual game winner. Tom Reimann and Steve Saviano helped set up the eventual game winner. Try as they might, the Lynx could not beat Zepp again. Late in the game with the extra attacker on the ice, Dzieduszycki went high over the glove of Zepp only to find the crossbar, and Augusta saw their chance at victory slip away 3-2. Kostur finished with 36 saves for Augusta, while Zepp turned in a 22 save performance for the win.
Saturday night's game proved to be more of the same for the Lynx. Augusta would once again score first in the contest, breaking onto the score sheet at 7:32 of the opening frame. Jamie Johnson's wraparound attempt was stymied by goaltender Craig Kowalski, but Ken Magowan crashed the net on the rebound and shoveled the puck over the line to give Augusta the lead. Rod Sarich also picked up a helper on the opening strike. Florida came back with a pair of goals to take a 2-1 lead, the first from Matt Hendricks at 13:30, followed by Kris Vernarsky's shorthanded goal at 15:40 from Steve Saviano to give the Everblades the lead after one period of play. The second period featured no scoring, and the Everblades entered the third period with a one-goal lead. Vernarsky's second goal of the evening made it a two-goal deficit for Augusta, but Matt Dzieduszycki's hard work in the corner set up a Jim Shepherd marker at 10:49 to bring the Lynx back within a goal. Jamie Johnson also helped set up the goal. Despite continued pressure from the Lynx, it would be Florida who closed out the scoring, first with a Brandon Coalter tally at 15:53, followed by a Matt Hendricks empty net goal to cement a 5-2 win. Matus Kostur stopped 31 shots in the loss for Augusta, while Kowalski turned aside 27 from the Lynx in the win. Augusta's record now drops to 7-15-2 on the season.
