Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â In a three-game series where Alaska led for exactly 74 seconds, the Aces nevertheless gained a 1-1-1 split with a grueling 3-2 overtime victory over Mississippi in front of 3,874 Sunday at Sullivan Arena.
In a physical, hard-hitting affair, neither team broke through in a scoreless first period. As they did last night in a 3-0 shutout of Alaska, the Sea Wolves scored early in the second period, as Chris Cava converted a power play with a laser just underneath the crossbar at 4:20. On this night, however, the Aces came right back, scoring on a power play of their own when Charles Linglet jammed home a loose puck in front with 4:21 left in the period, ending Matt Underhill's scoreless streak at 95:39.
Alaska grabbed its first lead of the series at 2-1 when B.J. Young beat Underhill with a backhander eight minutes into the third period, but barely a minute later, Cava again struck on a power play set up by a roughing minor assessed against Young immediately after his go-ahead goal. Tied 2-2 after regulation, Scott Gomez found defenseman Ryan Bast, who earlier had assisted on Young's goal and also fought the league leader in majors (Mississippi's Lee Jacobson), in the left circle with a cross-ice pass as he entered the zone. Bast promptly slid the puck underneath the sprawling Underhill at 3:04 of overtime to end a three-game winless skid for the Aces (13-11-2).
Alaska will hold three optional skates Tuesday through Thursday before returning to practice at 7:00 p.m. December 26. The Aces play host to San Diego, with whom they currently share third place in the West Division, on the nights of December 29 and 31. Both games against the Gulls start at 7:15 p.m. and will be broadcast on flagship station KFQD 750 AM and also made available on a pay-per-view basis at www.alaskaaces.com, courtesy of B2 Networks.
