Trenton Devils News Release
TRENTON, NJ â The Trenton Titans finished their stretch of seven games in nine days with a 3-1-0 record and remain tied for second place in the North Division.
The Titans started the week by finishing their five-game road trip with two matches against the Dayton Bombers. On Tuesday, Trenton was able to hold on for a 4-3 win and then eked by in shootout, 3-2, at Hobart Arena on Thursday night.
Trenton returned home on Friday morning to host Wheeling that night and fell to the Nailers 3-2. The Titans rebounded the following evening triumphing over their intra-state rivals, the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies.
The Titans enjoy a week off before facing off against the Dayton Bombers on Tuesday, December 28 at 7:00pm at the Sovereign Bank Arena.
LAST WEEK: 3-1-0
Tuesday, December 14 @ Dayton, 7:00pm W 4-3 Nutter Center
- Mathieu Brunelle's hat trick led the way as the Trenton Titans squeezed out a 4-3 win over the Dayton Bombers. Out-shooting the Bombers 15-7 in the first period, the Titans were able to skate into the locker room with a 1-0 lead on Brunelle's sixth goal of the season. In the second period, it was more Brunelle when he batted Stephen Wood's rebound past Andrew Penner for a power play goal to give the Titans a two-goal cushion. After Matt Zultek and Tyler Kolarik traded goals to make the score 3-1, Brunelle completed the hat trick at 13:29 of the middle period to put the Titans up by three. The Bombers would go away easily, however, as Matt Herneisen and Tyler Sloan each scored :57 apart in the final frame to cut Trenton's lead to just one goal. Andrew Allen and the Titans would shut the door from there to escape with the 4-3 victory. Allen made 37 saves on the evening to raise his record to 8-2-1 and his road to record to 6-1-0.
Thursday, December 16 @ Dayton, 7:30pm W 3-2 (SO) Hobart Arena â Troy, OH
- Despite twice giving up a goal-lead, the Trenton Titans were able to prevail in the shootout, 3-2 over the Dayton Bombers in front of 3,059 at Hobart Arena. After a scoreless first period, Matt Zultek put the Titans up 1-0 with just 30.1 seconds left the middle stanza when he beat Andrew Penner with a wrist shot inside the near post. The Bombers would tie it up 1:04 into the third period when Shawn Limpright put Steve Goertzen's centering pass past Chris Houle. Rick Kowalsky put Trenton back up by one goal with 3:01 remaining with a turnaround backhander that squeezed through Penner's pads. Once again, Dayton would not go away easily as Tyler Sloan made the score 2-2 with just 1:40 remaining in regulation. Trenton could not convert on a power play in overtime, but three Titans would score in the shootout as Houle turned away 3 of 4 to clinch the win.
Friday, December 17 vs. Wheeling, 7:30pm L 3-2 Sovereign Bank Arena
- After 40 minutes of play, the Trenton Titans trailed 3-0 to the Wheeling Nailers, but ultimately lost a 3-2, breaking a six game unbeaten streak It was just one of those nights for the Titans, as they outshot the Nailers 42-18, but never had control of the game. Special teams were critical early in the contest, as the Nailers notched a power play goal 14:53 into the first period when Wheeling winger Steve Crampton punched a rebound by the pads of Andrew Allen to give his team the early lead. The Nailers carried their momentum into the second securing a two-goal lead, when Evgeny Lazarev found the top of the Titans net. Late in the second, the Titans yielded the Nailers third goal on a short-handed opportunity to Crampton for his second goal of the evening. The Titans finally hit their stride in the third, needing three goals to send the game beyond regulation, and getting two. Brent Robinson's goal, a one-timer (6:10), assisted by Rick Kowalsky and Conor Dunlop got the Titans on the board. But, despite Mathieu Brunelle's tally with 3:02 remaining, the effort was too late.
Saturday, December 18 vs. Atlantic City, 7:30pm W 4-2 Sovereign Bank Arena
- Behind two Scott Bertoli goals, the Trenton Titans claimed a share of the Northern Division lead by defeating their intra-state rival Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies, 4-2. Bertoli set the tone of the game, scoring his first goal at 3:52 to give the Titans a critical lead. The early surge continued when the Titans took advantage of a four-on-three power play opportunity in the middle of the first period, when Jerramie Domish pounded home the rebound coming off of a Brent Robinson shot to make it 2-0. In the second, it was Bertoli who struck again giving the Titans a three-goal lead on a Trenton's first power play opportunity of the period. The Boardwalk Bullies finally put a shot past Chris Houle at 3:54 in the third period, when forward Jason Notermann scored his 14th goal of the season . Just a few minutes later, Luke Curtin launched a high wrist shot past Houle, giving Atlantic City its second goal of the game. However, Bryce Cockburn gave control back to the Titans with just his second goal of the season at the 14:52 mark.
