San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO ââ Now these are the San Diego Gulls everyone is used to seeing... After a perfect week, San Diego has moved all the way from sixth place in the West Division into a third-place tie. And as of Monday, the Gulls are only one point out of second place and four points back of first place.
The Gulls beat the Long Beach Ice Dogs and then picked up two wins on the road against the Victoria Salmon Kings, extending their winning streak to a season-high four games. San Diego has also won nine of its last 11 games and STILL has games in and on all the contending teams in the West.
WEEK IN REVIEW:
Dec. 15 vs. Long Beach: Curtis Brown's goal in the fifth round of the shootout and Chris Lynch's two goals in regulation lifted the Gulls to a 4-3 shootout win over Long Beach, to complete their homestand with a 7-2-0 mark. Lynch also chipped in with an assist while Mike Garrow and Mark Pederson each tallied two points. San Diego went ahead 1-0 in the game before the Ice Dogs scored two straight, taking a 2-1 advantage. Lynch tied the game early in the third period and had the equalizer again after Long Beach jumped ahead 3-2.
Dec. 17 @ Victoria: Brian Gornick supplied all the offense with two goals and goaltender Eddy Ferhi turned aside 34 shots, leading San Diego to a tight 2-1 win over the Salmon Kings, the club's first-ever game North of the Border. Gornick gave the Gulls a 1-0 lead midway through the first period, before Victoria tied it early in the second. Halfway through the middle frame Gornick lit the lamp again and Ferhi did the rest, shutting the Salmon Kings down the rest of the way.
Dec. 18 @ Victoria: It was a back-and-forth game all night long, but Max Birbraer's goal midway through the third period was the deciding factor as the Gulls beat the Salmon Kings for the second straight night, 5-4. San Diego trailed by a goal three different times in the game, but each time came back to tie. The Gulls held a 4-3 lead going into the third period, but this time the Salmon Kings knotted things up. Birbraer netted the game-winning goal at the 9:57 mark of the third and that was that.
PLAYER NOTES: Birbraer, who leads the team with 20 points (8g, 12a), had his six-game point streak snapped Wednesday. He had 13 points during that span... Sean O'Connor had his five-game point streak snapped on Wednesday. He had 11 points during that span... Garrow has six points (2g, 4a) during his four-game point streak... Evgueni Nourislamov was called-up by the American Hockey League's Syracuse Crunch last week... Mathieu Chouinard remains with the AHL's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks... Sean Murphy, recovering from a fractured knuckle, is expected to be back in the lineup shortly after Christmas...
TEAM NOTES: The Gulls have won a season-high four straight games... San Diego is 9-2-0 in its last 11 games, outscoring its opponents 44-29 during that span... The Gulls are now 3-5-1 on the road and 10-2-1 at home this season... They've outscored their opponents 61-30 in their 13 wins, but have been outscored 31-13 in their nine losses (which includes an overtime and shootout loss)... The Blue and Orange have allowed 11 power-play goals in their last six games... The Gulls were 13-7-2 through 21 games last season...
