Lukas Sutter Named CCM/ECHL All-Star
January 8, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Stockton Thunder News Release
West Valley City, UT - The Stockton Thunder, proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL's New York Islanders and AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, have announced that Lukas Sutter has been named as an alternate for the CCM ECHL All-Star Classic in Orlando, Florida on January 21.
"It's an honor obviously; I really wasn't expecting it," Sutter said. "Obviously it's exciting to be included in that group of players and if the opportunity arises that I get to represent the Thunder in Orlando than I'll certainly do it with a lot of pride."
Sutter, 21 is in his first pro season after he completed a five-year WHL career with the Saskatoon Blades and Red Deer Rebels. The St. Louis, Missouri born forward was drafted by NHL teams twice, once in the second round by the Winnipeg Jets and again last season in the seventh round by the New York Islanders.
"It's good for Lukas," Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Rich Kromm said. "He's worked and competed hard all year and has done a good job for us killing penalties, playing hard five-on-five and battling. It's a good feather in his cap and we're happy to see him get that honor."
Sutter has suited up for 35 games during his rookie season in pro hockey, scoring 2 goals and adding 7 assists. He leads rookies with 131 penalty minutes while also ranking fifth in the ECHL in penalty minutes.
"Last year I didn't play a lot of hockey when I was shutdown in March for shoulder surgery," Sutter said. "When you miss 35 games in a season it takes some time to get back into things and coming from that into your first year of pro is tough. I'm used to being bigger and stronger than my competition but that has been the biggest adjustment for me is dealing with guys that are your size or bigger is an adjustment.
Teddy Bear Toss is coming up soon for the Thunder as fans will be invited to bring stuffed animals to the game on January 24 and once the Thunder score their first goal, are invited to toss them out onto the ice where they will be distributed to children in need.
