
Loewen Backstops Stingrays to 5-4 Victory over Wings

Kalamazoo, MI -Goaltender Andrew Loewen earned his first ECHL victory as the South Carolina Stingrays (26-19-1-1) defeated the Kalamazoo Wings (21-19-2-2) 5-4 at Wings Stadium Saturday evening.
The Stingrays captured the contest's opening marker at 7:43 of the first period when forward Dan Eves deflected a shot from defenseman Patrick Cullity between the legs of Wings goaltender Ryan Nie. Forward Grant McNeill received the second assist. The Wings tied the contest at 13:59 with an unassisted marker from forward Kory Karlander. Forward Justin Taylor made it a 2-1 Wings lead on the power play at 16:37 from Karlander and forward Patrick Asselin. Stingrays forward Rob Ricci knotted the contest back up with 46 seconds left in the period by sneaking a backhanded shot between the legs of Nie off the left-wing post. Forward Tommy Goebel earned the lone assist.
Stingrays forward Luke Popko broke the 2-2 deadlock at 10:46 of the middle stanza from Goebel.
Goebel and forward Matt Scherer added two quick tallies in the third period to give the Stingrays a three-goal lead. Goebel found the twine at 6:38 from defenseman Dustin Stevenson and forward Nikita Kashirsky. Scherer buried his 11 of the season moments later from forward Dan Eves at 8:53. The Wings responded with two goals 20 seconds apart to pull within one. Taylor grabbed his 19 of the campaign at 12:33 from Asselin and Karlander. Forward Andrew Fournier lit the lamp at 12:53 from defenseman Steven Tarasuk and forward Darryl Lloyd.
Lowen stood strong late in the third period and ended the night stopping 27 of 31 Wings shots. Nie picked up the loss kicking away 34 of 39 Stingrays chances. The Stingrays finished the contest 0-for-7 on the power play while the Wings went 1-for-2.
The Stingrays wrap up their season-long six-game road trip on Wednesday, February 9 against the Greenville Road Warriors at 7:05 p.m. at the Bi-Lo Center.
