Sacramento River Cats News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Making his first career start in Triple-A, River Cats starter Arnold Leon gave up one run and six hits against nine strikeouts through 7.0 innings on the mound in a 1-0 loss to the Tucson Padres on Wednesday night at Raley Field.
Tucson took the lead in the second inning, scoring on a two-out RBI single off the bat of center fielder Jaff Decker. The Padres doubled their advantage in the eighth inning when a wild pitch from Cats reliever Kyler Newby allowed Chris Robinson to get home from third. Sacramento threatened to score in the eighth inning, loading the bases off of three walks by the Tucson bullpen. Brad Boxberger ended the threat for the Padres against Michael Choice, getting the outfielder to pop out to second baseman Jonathan Galvez.
Matt Andriese earned the win for Tucson, throwing 7.0 shutout innings to go along with eight strikeouts. The right-hander had a no-hitter going through 5.2 innings until Daric Barton broke into the box score with a double to right field. Leon was the hard luck loser for the Cats, taking his first defeat at the Triple-A level. Miles Mikolas picked up his 18th save of the season for the Padres, recording a 1-2-3 ninth inning to lock down the win.
Shane Peterson's outfield assist to catcher Ryan Ortiz in the third inning to gun down Padres shortstop Dean Anna at the plate was the third time this season that a River Cat outfielder has thrown out a runner at home. Jeremy Barfield was the last Cat to do so, throwing out Nashville's Scooter Gennett at home in a 5-2 win on May 11. The combined one-hitter thrown by Tucson was the first time the River Cats had been held to a single hit this season.
The River Cats return to the road for the first time since May 21, heading south to take on their in-state rival the Fresno Grizzlies on Independence Day. Sacramento's starter will be announced later that day, with Mitch Lively (3-2, 6.34 ERA) set to take the ball for Fresno.
