Nashville Blanks Memphis on Independence Day, 7-0

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Eight shutout innings of three-hit ball from Chris Narveson combined with three Sounds homers powered Nashville to a 7-0 shutout victory over the Memphis Redbirds on Independence Day in front of 12,664 fans at AutoZone Park in the opener of a four-game series.

Narveson finished with three hits, three walks, and seven strikeouts in the longest outing by a Sounds pitcher this season. The former Redbird allowed a leadoff walk in the second, and then retired a team-high 15 Redbirds in a row leading up to a pair of hits in the eighth inning.

It was Memphis' (41-47) fifth defeat of the season and first on Independence Day in franchise history.

Coming into yesterday's contest with the fewest home runs allowed in the league, the Redbirds have surrendered seven in their last two games,

The Sounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on four singles against Scott McGregor (2-5). Josh Prince singled and scored on a Hunter Morris RBI base hit before Caleb Gindl came home on a Stephen Parker RBI.

Nashville tacked on two more runs in the next inning, beginning with Blake Davis' first home run of the year, a solo shot over the right field foul pole. Narveson helped his own cause by ripping a double and later scoring on a passed ball and wild pitch.

Khris Davis extended the Sounds lead in the third with a solo bomb into the Redbirds bullpen, his 11th of the season. With a runner aboard in the sixth, Robinson Diaz went yard over the right field wall off of Victor Marte to conclude the night's scoring. The roundtripper was Diaz' first of the season.

McGregor gave up five runs (four earned) on seven hits (two home runs) and a walk in four innings. The right-hander also struck out three with 75 pitches, 50 for strikes.

Marte was charged with a pair of runs in two innings. Jorge Rondon finished the game with a shutout ninth inning.

Sam Freeman struck out four over two scoreless to extend his consecutive shutout streak by a reliever to a season-high 22.0 innings, matching the Redbirds record set by Josh Kinney from June 28-August 12, 2006.

The two Tennessee rivals continue their series at 7:05 pm CT on Friday night at AutoZone Park. Right-hander Carlos Martinez will take the mound against left-hander Zach Kroenke (4-10, 4.29).
